Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone - Features, Review, Verdict and Price: In the Name of Adventure!

Huawei, down then in 2011 did a phone which they called the Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone. Would you like to get some insight? I talk about the features and the price of Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone and give my verdict.

I love bars, truly. I'm sick of touchscreen phones for a while now. I mean, all you've got is a screen, where are those godforsaken buttons gone? I miss them. But no more, good to know. Glad to know there still are companies like Huawei that care for customers/users like me who don't get attracted to touchscreens as much as to sliders or flips or candybars anyway. Well, I still remember the bliss of MotoRazr. But well, since I'm making a list of phones that haven't been able to do too well in the market, basically trying to talk about few most unknown phones, especially if for some, things were expected. So, here I'm up for talking about a phone that's a candybar thing. It's brought to you by Huawei, a company well-established but not too good with their way into mobile phones.

Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone price in US
I'm about to talk about the Huawei Discovery Expedition, a phone that carries the whole logo of Discovery channel right below its screen. Well, I don't know much but that definitely signified they've got to do something with the Discovery too. Well, I guess something similar to Bear Grylls stuff like in the Kyocera Hydro XTRM but I'm not sure of.

In this article, I'll try to cover features and in all, give a review of the phone.

Features of Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone: A Waterproof Package

The phone, first of all seems to have been built with an aim to create something which adventure lovers would love to carry around with them. Obviously, you cannot go trekking with a feeble Android smartphone which may go dysfunctional at the first drop of water that it may absorb. The phone which was released in late 2011, I guess was expected to do great in the market because of Huawei's alliance with Discovery Channel in the pursuit of marketing the phone, but it seems it all went into vain. People barely even came to know about it and that's the reason it's here in my list of most unpopular phones.

  • Design of Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone

  • The phone, if you ask me, looks really great. The Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone has got muscles, if you look carefully at the rubber casing on the sides. Not only the orange edgy stuff adds to the attractiveness of the machine, it also aids to the grip one has of it in the hands. It truly fits great in the hands. It's a candybar phone with sturdy build which you can trust without giving it a second thought. Talking about build quality, it has got high ruggedness IP rating (precisely 57). That makes the phone water resistant (but only upto a depth of 1 meter at the max and for a maximum duration of half an hour), dustproof and shockproof. You can trust the machine to be a good companion that'll aid you when you're in places not so good to roam around in. It's dimensions are 4.51 x 1.99 x 0.63 inches (114.5 x 50.5 x 16 mm) and it is perfect for the pocket.

  • Display of Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone

  • The Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone has got an averagely done display of two inches. I won't disagree to Huawei's idea of keeping the screen size small because luxury ain't the prime objective of this product. It's rather sturdiness and when you're talking of adventure, you don't want the product to bug you taking a lot of space in the pocket. And a big display definitely amounts to increase in the overall size of the machine. The screen resolution and pixel per inch density of the Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone are 240x320 and 200 ppi respectively. Average, not bad when thinking of the motive.

  • Battery Backup of Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone

  • Well, you surely don't want your phone to run out of battery when you're lost in the darkest woods ever known to man and you want some adventure and not a warning signal on the screen of your phone. The Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone has got a good 1000 mAh which yields an average of 5 hours of talktime on 3G, upto approx. 6 hours on 2G and an enormous 450 hours standby time, as per Phonearena. I think the purpose is well served. Who would like to hang on a conversation with the girlfriend while trying to have a glimpse of some venomous pit vipers anyway?

  • Hardware in Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone

  • Why are we talking of it anyway? Oh, enough of my nonsense now. Well, the Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone packs a Qualcomm QSC6270 processor. Suiting to its requirements well enough, it has only 64MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM.

  • Camera, Multimedia and Storage features in Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone

  • The Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone has a 2 MP camera that won't be a good companion now, if you plan to use it for photographing those wild species while deep in the jungle. I guess professionals would love to carry a DSLR camera anyway. The phone clicks away poor pictures, lacking severely in sharpness but if you need it really that badly, it won't kill your expectations. The camera on the back looks good. Talking about multimedia, the phone can play MP3 and MP4 and as per Huawei's claims, it has got loud speakers. You have a 3.5 mm audio jack to soothe you in your adventures and not much though. It supports memory expansion upto 8GB through a microSD card slot located beneath the battery and has an internal memory of 68 MB only.

  • Connectivity and Other Features in Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone

  • The Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone has got some really good features. To mention a few, it has the G-sensor that records your steps. So while you were busy chasing a deer silently and lost track of how you landed into where you are, the phone can be a life saver. It has got built-in GPS, a digital compass, a torch that can light you up in dark times. It can store upto 1000 contacts and 1000 messages and runs on something called Brew Mobile Platform (the OS). The phone has got FM and a range of social candy apps like FB and Twitter. There is Bluetooth and Huawei claims music playback for 15 and more hours regularly. Ooh la la!

Final Verdict of Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone

Well, being candid, I'm impressed. Keeping in mind the very purpose Huawei were up to, I think the phone was done well. Maybe because of lack of interest they didn't land it into the Indian market, but then if I had the money I'd may consider giving it a second thought, regarding getting it shipped from the US.

Price of Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone
The price of Huawei Discovery Expedition in the US at the time of launch was $199. I think if someday Huawei plan to launch it in India, price of Huawei Discovery Expedition Phone in India would be nothing less than 8K. Worth the price, totally!
