How AI romance apps can be a privacy hazard?

The latest survey by the non-profit organization Mozilla has put a big question mark on the credibility of AI romance apps. According to the survey, the apps can be a privacy hazard. Let's find out what it means.

In this rapidly growing world full of AI even your love life has not been untouched by this technology. For those unaware, AI chatbots can offer some companionship to alleviate the romantic void caused by not having a partner. These applications are more than just basic algorithms providing pre-programmed responses to user inquiries; they learn from conversations and individual styles, adapting and customizing accordingly. Consequently, the same algorithm is likely to generate different conversations with various users or even with the same user on different occasions. Comparable to conventional AI chatbots, companion bots utilize extensive training data to emulate human language. However, they are equipped with additional functionalities- like voice calls, sharing pictures, and engaging in more emotional interactions- that enable them to forge deeper connections with the individuals interacting with them. These bots are used to cope with loneliness by users who have developed emotional attachments to them.

Modern relationships are characterized by complexities like commitment and emotions, which explains the popularity of AI companions. Globally, people are embracing and enjoying the concept of artificial intelligence companions. They can provide you with the kind of emotional support, romantic interaction, or conversation you desire.

Although this emerging trend initially generated a lot of hype, there are concerns to be considered. This is the reason you should think twice before spending time with an AI girlfriend or boyfriend because you may not find them dependable. There are incidents when users develop emotional attachments with these companion bots and suffer heartbreak. AI chatbots that focus on romantic conversations with users rank among the worst in terms of privacy concerns. Just remember that an AI may be exploiting your vulnerabilities instead of caring for your heart when it appears to be connecting with you perfectly.

Why These Apps Can Be a Privacy Hazard?

A standard advice to start a relationship with an AI companion could be to make sure they are from a reputable or trustworthy website. This is because you might disclose your personal information such as your real name, phone number, address, and banking details to your virtual partner. Romantic chatbots amass vast amounts of data, offer scant details of their usage policies, employ weak password safeguards, and lack transparency.

Also, if you are unaware let us tell you that a recent survey conducted by the nonprofit organization Mozilla concluded that chatbots are a privacy nightmare.

Mozilla's research discovered that numerous AI companion applications fall short in privacy assessment and frequently do not adhere to the guidelines set forth by their chatbots for their users.

The researchers analyzed 11 soulmate apps and gave all of them a negative assessment. The research says that the apps can not provide adequate security for the personal data they gather from the users. The study also revealed that 73% of the apps don't explain how they deal with security vulnerabilities and 45 percent of them even allow weak passwords. Also, the majority of these apps don't allow users to delete their data.

According to Wired, the apps collect a huge amount of people's data and use trackers that send information to companies in Russia and China including Google and Facebook. Among other things, the apps have been downloaded more than 100 million times on Android devices. They allow users to use weak passwords and they lack transparency about their ownership and their AI model.

It's common in romantic relationships to exchange secrets and sensitive personal information but these bots heavily rely on such information. These bots are commonly marketed as soulmates but they ask you very personal questions putting your privacy at great risk. While certain chatbots might assert themselves as personalized romantic companions it's crucial to first asses their data policies, security measures, and transparency regarding AI models.

Bottom Line

It is so true that the advent of generative AI (Gen AI) spurred a boom in romantic chatbots designed to provide companionship to lonely people. But the reality is not the same because they do not have the hearts of humans and thus they are emotionless and can't be your real friends. It is impossible for an AI companion to replace a real person since it is made of artificial science. Moreover, the reality is that they either intentionally or negligently ignore security and privacy practices.
