History of Windows Operating System
How Windows OS came into existence? This article provides the history of Windows operating system.
It is a known fact that MS-DOS is the first ever used Operating system which was a command based OS. MS-DOS OS was the product of Microsoft who experimented a lot to come up with a Graphical User Based OS. This process of working towards GUI based OS was initiated by Microsoft in the year 1983.
These experiments gave out fruitful results in 1985 when the first independent version of Windows called Windows 1.0 was released into the market. Initially the name given for this GUI operating system was "INTERFACE MANAGER", but the then head of Marketing of Microsoft felt that the name was not very catchy and suggested "WINDOWS" as the name for the new OS. He felt that the name "WINDOWS" itself would be sounding pleasantly to the customers when compared to "INTERFACE MANAGER".
Though it was called independent GUI based OS, Windows 1.0 was not a complete operating system. It was more of a operating environment which was a bit extended version of MS-DOS. The utilities that existed with 1.0 were Windows-Paint, Windows-write, a simple word processor, a calendar for managing appointments, a notepad, clock, control panel with limited capabilities, a clip board and a RAM -Driver. The one and the only game that was existing in 1.0 was the game called Reversi.
This was the first steps of the evolution of Windows. Later on these toddler steps grew into confident steps and today as a result of those efforts WINDOWS stands to the most widely used Operating System throughout the World.
