Interview with Tanmay Ahmed, a professional blogger. His most popular blog is Learn about his journey into the blogging world and achievements from this interview.

You have been a well known blogger and an inspiration to many other new bloggers. Can you please tell us something about yourself?Tanmay Ahmed
Hiya!! My name is Tanmay Ahmed, a professional blogger from Kolkata. I come from a very poor family. I have completed B.Sc (Mathematics) from the University of Kalyani and MCA (Master in Computer Application) from Netaji Subhash Engineering College, Kolkata. There was a time, when I could not apply for my university exams because of my poverty. But I never gave up and continued my study, with help of some great people in society. In the span of time, I learnt that fighting never ends, it just changes in form. I love to challenge myself and will continue till my death.

How long is it since you have begun blogging?

I am 31 years old. It is about 4 years since I am into blogging. I came to know about blogging in 2009, when I was studying for MCA.

How many blogs do you have?

I have only one blog now,

Does any family members help you in blogging?

No, I am the only person in my family having knowledge in blogging. Even my brother and sister, both of them being B.Tech engineers don't know anything about blogging.

How did you come to know about blogging? How was your beginning in the blogging industry?

It is a long story. Unfortunately in late 2008, I had a breakup with my girlfriend which made me so upset and difficult to survive. At that time, I used to go and visit my friend to spend some time. One day, I noticed my friend Amit Banerjee, doing something with his laptop with deep concentration. I asked him curiously about that. I can clearly remember that conversation with Amit.

Me: What are you doing Amit?
Amit: Blogging!!
Me: What is blogging? I want to get involved in it.
Amit: You won't.
Me: Why not?
Amit: Very tough and it needs so much dedication.
Me: Tell me please.
Amit: Okay, I will describe it. Hope this will keep you away from your past memories (breakup).
Me: Thank you.

That is the beginning of my blogging journey. Amit described the initial steps, pros and cons of blogging. He also helped me find a free .com domain and one year free unlimited hosting account (using Dreamhost coupon) for me.

Tell us about your first blog.

I started my first blog with my name (, where I started to write about technology tips and tricks. But later, I thought that the domain name is not good for a long term purpose and started another website called as I did too much of testing with that site and got penalized. Later, I chose blogging as my profession and started the blog

What makes your blog interesting to your current readers? How did make your blog popular?

From the starting of my blogging career, I always believed that people search the internet mostly when they face any problem. So, I started to write about solutions for some general problems. This made my blog popular.

Why did you choose this niche?

I believe, everyone should go for the niche which he/she knows very well. Without any expertise in the niche, no one can be successful. As playing with codes was my hobby during my MCA course, I chose Technology as my blog niche.

Which websites do you browse regularly?

I am an avid reader of MakeTechEasier, How-to Geek, The Next Web, Mashable, Digital Inspiration, Techulator etc. I regularly visit those blogs because they are unique.

What are the technology websites and blogs you are associated with? How many blogs you have? Do you write articles in other sites?

Currently, I am working on only one site. But, I was a regular contributor to That helped me a lot to afford my hosting cost, when I had zero earnings from my own blog.

How is your daily schedule? How many hours you work in your blog?

I do not have a schedule as such. I spend at least 4-5 hours everyday with my blog.

Which webmaster/blogger is your role model? Which blogs you like to follow?

Frankly, I am inspired by so many bloggers. Some of them are Amit Agarwal (DI), Damien Oh(MTE). I like to follow all the sites that I love to read which I mentioned earlier.

Who are the top 5 technical experts/bloggers in your network?

I do not have any network. But recently I discussed with Tony John, the owner of on some issues.

What do you think about the future of blogging? Do you think it will continue to be a profitable business in the long run?

There is no doubt that blogging has a good future. Nowadays, the competition is too high. It is very tough to survive without long term planning, patience and great dedication.

What are your future plans?

I want to enter into affiliate marketing soon. It is another source of great income in a short time.

How much do you make from your blogs? What are the sources of income?

It is tough to reveal the exact earning. I started my blogging with zero income and have reached to about six figures(INR) per month from my blog. I use only AdSense to monetize my blog.

Do you use affiliate marketing to earn revenue?

Not yet! But I am planning to enter into Affiliate marketing.

Which source of revenue you suggest as an alternative to Google AdSense?

Frankly, there is no alternative to AdSense. But you can try Chitika, Infolink, Kontera etc. BuySellAds is another great way to monetize your blog.

Most big bloggers have reported that their revenue has been coming down in last few years due to high competition. How is your earnings in last few years?

I will not agree with them. What I've seen in the last 2-3 years is that there is no shortcut way to make money. You'll have to be honest with your work. Both the traffic and earnings for my blog have grown a lot in past one year.

How did blogging help you personally other than making money?

Like I already said, It helped me to get out of the shock while my girlfriend left me alone.

What does your family think about your blogs?

It was very tough to convince my dad and mom about blogging. They don't know anything about it. They were not ready to believe that someone can earn from the internet. But later they believed me, when I showed them my AdSense check from Google.

Did your blogs get affected by the Panda and Penguin updates from Google?

Panda affected a lot of honest and good sites. The manual Panda updates never affected TechTipsGeek. But I am facing some different issues like content scraping, click bombing etc. in the last 2-3 months which made me a bit worried.

What is your take on unhealthy practices like sharing insulting information about other prominent bloggers?

I'd simply ignore them.

What do you advice, focus on a single site or create several sites in various niche?

I always prefer to focus on a single website. Once you are pretty satisfied with it, you can go for another one.

I would like to thank the author for publishing the interview of Mr.Tanmay. His story is an inspiration to many as he came from a poor family and has been able to reach the top based on his hardwork and dedication. The author has shared a important tip in the last question of the interview that every blogger should try to concentrate on only one blog and once completely satisfied he can move on to the next one. Many bloggers get their hands dirty on multiple blogs at the same time and are not able to focus on even one and start losing revenue. This will be an important tip for those bloggers.
