Upcoming Smartphones running on Firefox OS
Sony has announced the launching of their Firefox OS mobile phone. This post covers latest news of Sony FireFox OS and details for Samsung's decision on FireFox OS and ZTE open Firefox OS mobile phone.
Firefox OS smartphone
In my earlier post on Firefox OS mobile, I have already covered features, price and release date of the handset. Let me summarize below this OS in a few points:
1. Firefox OS or Boot to Gecko is based on Linux kernel. The main motto of this OS is to run HTML 5 apps.
2. This OS comes already installed in Samsung Galaxy S2 for demonstration.
3. Initially, this mobile was expected to launch in 2012, but now postponed to August 2013.
4. Firefox mobile phones will be available in the price range of $100 to $300 (Rs.5000 to Rs.15, 000 in India).
The device is very less in demand for its lower popularity among the customers. But now Sony's support to hardware vendor will surely attract customers towards Mozilla Firefox OS. For having support of HTML 5, like Android smartphone, this device will support gaming also. Though a large number of HTML 5 apps are already available on internet but support to these apps depends on hardware capability of this mobile phone. Sony to launch Firefox OS mobile
At present, the ZTE, Huawei and Alcatel are hardware partners of Firefox OS and having very low influence in U.S. Smartphone market. Now Sony also joined hands with Firefox as a hardware partner and the Sony Firefox mobile is expected to arrive in the market in 2014. They have also announced to sign up a multi-year agreement with mobile operators Telefonica wherein the mobile operator will continue to support Sony's Android product line. Sony has already started to work on Firefox OS Mobile and HTML 5 and now planning to develop a user-friendly mobile. Mozilla said that Sony Firefox mobile will be available for U.S. customers in sometime next year. Samsung confirms to not release Firefox OS mobile
Samsung reported to the press that they are not interested in Firefox OS rather they will focus on Tizen OS. At present, Samsung is the only partner of Tizen OS and both are ready to launch their smartphone with new operating system. On the other hand, Mozilla, after losing its giant partner like Samsung, expected to face an intense competition in market. ZTE released Firefox OS smartphone
ZTE has released the world's first Firefox OS smartphone on February 25, 2013. This mobile phone is named as ZTE Open. This mobile phone will be available in Spain, Venezuela and Colombia. ZTE Open is the entry-level smart phone with the configuration such as 3.5-inch touchscreen, Cortex-A5 Qualcomm processor with clock speed 600MHz or 800MHz, 512MB ROM +256 MB RAM memory, 3.2MP rear camera, 1200mAH battery capacity, and support for Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, WI-Fi. This mobile is targeted towards the young people who adore new technology. I don't think whether this mobile can withstand against Android smartphones. Firefox OS is a good concept and that mainly relies on low configuration mobiles.
