How to set up and use VPN network in Windows 8

VPN is a way of establishing encrypted secure networks for communication between private computers located in remote locations but acting as they are on a local host network. It allows you to connect to your work PC from your home without any danger of data leakage. No one can see the data communication occurring inside a VPN tunnel.

In this tutorial I will give you step by step instructions on how you can create a VPN network on a Windows 8 system. In Windows 8 you have an inbuilt VPN technology that connects to the remote server built in Windows Server Technology called the RRAS (Routing and Remote Access). You won't need this tutorial if you already have the experience of establishing a VPN network in Windows 7. However, the Metro user interface can cause some confusion and in that case you can refer the instructions given below.

Steps to set up a VPN network

1. Open the Control Panel and click on View network status and tasks.





2. Click on Set up a new connection or network.





3. 3. Click on the last option of Connect to a workplace.





4. Click on Next.


5. Click on Use my Internet Connection (VPN).





6. Enter the Internet Address and check any tick boxes according to your preference and click on create.

Instructions to connect to the VPN Network

1. Click on the Network symbol shown in the task bar or open your Charms bar (Windows key + I) and click on the Network button (DLink in the image below).
   
   


2. 2. You will see the recently created VPN network. Click on the Connect button to connect to the VPN Network.
   
   

Steps to change the properties or remove the VPN network

1. In case you want to change any of the properties of the VPN network just right click on the VPN network and click on View connection properties.
   
   
   Otherwise you can also go to Network Sharing Center > Change adapter settings (in the left side bar).


2. Right click on the VPN network and connect, edit or delete the VPN network of Windows 8.
