Read the HTC's Windows Phone 8X review to know more about this phone and an in depth description of its usability and performance.

I was in a mobile phone store recently to buy a Tata Photon+ datacard. While I was waiting to complete the documentation work, I talked to the store person which phones they sell most. I wasn't surprised to hear that the most selling phones are not Samsung Galaxy S3 or Apple iPhone but were some of the cheap models from Karbonn, Micromax and some not so popular chinese phones.

However, he added that one of the phones that has great enquiries and interest among the customers is, the HTC 8X Windows Phone. Since it is a premium phone priced on par with some of the expensive phones in India, not everyone can afford to buy this but almost everyone who is looking for a premium smartphone is interested in taking a look at this device.

I was waiting to get my hands on the HTC 8X and finally it reached my desk. The first impression by everyone who looked at this phone was 'Wow, looks cool and what is the price?'.

So, what is cool about this gadget? Let us take a look at this in detail, but here is the best prices available currently if you are planning to get one for you. The MRP of HTC 8X in India is Rs 39,999 but you can get it at much cheaper rate in many online stores like Tradus (Rs 34,449) and Flipkart (Rs 35,781).

Detailed review of Windows Phone 8X by HTC

I have with me today the HTC's Windows Phone 8x and it looks great. It doesn't weigh too much and the phone is well balanced with a sleek and stylish design. The 8X has a rounded back panel and a flat capacitive touch screen in the front, giving the display the illusion of being razor sharp. Below the display is the Menu, Search and Back function touch keys, on a plastic glass display front. The display is covered with Gorilla Glass 2 which is a scratch resistant material. The display on this phone is fantastic and a definite USP for the 8X.

The top edge of the phone is tapered by the curvature of the back cover. Here one can see a 3.5 mm audio jack. On the bottom edge of the phone is a port to plug in a micro USB cable for charging and data transfer. On the right side edge of the phone is a volume rocker and the slot for the SIM card. HTC's Windows Phone 8X is said to be the most comfortable phone you will hold, with an intelligent design that fits perfectly in your hand while talking, texting or browsing.

Display

The screen is 4.3" and capable of 720p HD display. The phone is light and weighs just 130 grams with the battery in it. It is made of reinforced Gorilla plastic for impact and scratch proof protection of the display.
The phone comes in an assortment of bright colors including, red, yellow, blue and black and looks refreshingly sporty. The display is breathtakingly high resolution and the touch function on the 8X is very responsive and precise. The phone also gives a response vibration when touched.

Accessories included with HTC 8X

In the box you will find along with the phone:

  • A pair of earphones

  • micro USB cable

  • Charger

  • SIM card opener (Thanks to HTC, I don't have to look for safety pins every time I need to change the SIM)

  • Manuals

  • Warranty card and details

  • HTC's Windows Phone 8X can be attached to a host of accessories that are not included in the pack including an assortment of skins and covers. The body of the phone is made of an interesting material which is light weight and with a good grip, it has an almost rubbery texture. For looks and design, this phone surely gets 5 stars.

    Camera

On the top left corner of the front display is a small 2.1 megapixel front camera with 1080p video recording capability. The front camera has an aperture of f/2.0 and has an ultra-wide capture range to get stunning and wider group pictures of friends. The front camera has a dedicated HTC imagechip. The back camera is the primary camera and is a 8 megapixel camera with auto focus and Led flash. It uses a 28 mm lens and employs a BSI sensor for low light capture and recording.

To access the camera I swiped the screen to the phone application menu and selected camera. The camera view popped up almost immediately and without any delay. The camera has an impressive auto focus function and displays good depth of field. I can switch from front camera to back camera with just a click of a soft button. The resolution looks great, the images are not pixilated and the sensor does a good job in producing a reasonable shutter speed for crisper images, not bad for a 5 megapixel camera and very versatile to experiment with.

    Features

HTC's Windows Phone 8X is not about just looking great but is really an impressive gadget. The smartphone boasts great features and some wonderful benefits of using a Windows phone. User interface is smooth and interactive. The phone uses the Windows Phone 8 platform and has a lot of applications to choose from. The start menu displays a set of moving tiles which display a number of menu functions. The touch and tap display is responsive, accurate and the display exhibits minimum discoloration when tilted. I think the display is sufficiently wide and the type interface is well spaced for quick typing and minimum typos.

Another added advantage of HTC's Windows Phone 8X is the exclusive built in amplifier for Beats Audio which plays high definition sound. This Phone has a great speaker capacity and sound is sufficiently clear and loud. However I did notice that the phone ringer was not loud enough and due to this I did miss some calls. Besides the ringer volume though, the phone speakers perform well.

Some other unique features of HTC's Windows Phone 8X are:

    1. A slim and stunning design that is made to fit in your hands or on your ear comfortably

    2. Wide front camera: The capture angle on the front camera is twice what it is for most smart phones. So you can take amazing pictures of friends and scenery.

    3. Beats Audio boost to speakers so that your phone gives the best sound output

    4. Live tiles on start screen to stay continuously updated with what is going on around you

    5. Windows Phone 8 platform

    6. Bluetooth and WIFI compatible

    Battery

The HTC Windows Phone 8X uses an embedded built in rechargeable battery that is a Li-ion Polymer battery of Capacity 1800 mAh. The battery can be charged either by using an A/c point or by connecting to your laptop via micro USB cable. The battery is built in and there is no way to open the back panel. Thats fine however as the SD card and sim enter in conveniently placed slots on the phone and this is much more user friendly we feel.

    CPU

HTC's Windows Phone 8X uses a Qualcomm S4 1.5 GHz Dual-core processor and are sufficiently responsive. The phone operates instantaneously and applications respond immediately without jerks or loading delay. The phone has an impressive built in memory of 16 GB and a RAM of 1GB, so it is quite fast.

Where to buy HTC 8X in India at the best price

The HTC 8X Windows Phone is available for purchase in all of the popular online shops. Because of the premium price, you may not find this on display in many small offline stores.

Here is the best price for HTC 8X in some of the popular online shops in India:

    Tradus.com: Rs 34,449

    Flipkart.com: Rs 35,781

    Snapdeal: Rs 33,420

    Disadvantages of HTC 8X

There are couple of things we felt HTC could improve on this phone. The first thing is, the ringer volume. We tried all default ringers available and none of them were loud enough to be audible in a noisy street. We infact missed a few calls because we couldn't hear it ringing.

Another thing that we felt not so good on the 8X is, the hard buttons on the edges are too blended with the phone and not projected out at all. This looks pretty neat but sometimes it is hard to feel the buttons with your finger and locate it. Especially the on/off button was pretty stiff and hard to sense using your finger. Moreover, this button does not give any feedback when you press, making you confused whether you actually clicked or not.

There is no microSD card slot and this means, you cannot expand the storage. You will have to live with the 16Gb built-in internal memory.

In spite of having some minor disadvantages, the HTC Windows Phone 8X is a stylish phone that is best for professionals and Windows Phone lovers. As of now, there are not many real competitors for the HTC 8X, other than the Nokia Lumia 920.
