Are you planning to buy Aakash 2 tablet PC? Read more to find out how to get this tablet computer for students at the discounted price from the Government.

Today, 12 Nov 2012, President of India Mr. Pranab Mukherjee launched the new Aakash-2 tablets in India to make the tablet computers available for all students, colleges and universities. Compared to the previous Aakash Tablet PC, the new tablet is a significant improvement from the old one. The new one comes with a lot of enhancements that make it worth giving a try. I purchased one of the old UbiSlate tablet PC, which is a horribly unusable tablet with its resistive screen and poor performing processor. Read full specifications of previous Aakash tablet PC.

How to buy Aakash 2 tablet PC

If you are planning to buy this new tablet PC at the discounted price, you may be disappointed. This tablet will not be available in retail stores just like its predecessor. At this time, government plans to offer this low cost tablet to selected universities and colleges only.

Just like the previous version of the tablet, the new one is also manufactured by DataWind, which may be disappointing to many people who have experienced the previous version.

Aakash 2 Tablet specifications The booking process of Aakash tablet (UbiSlate) was a complete mess. Most people who booked the tablet never received it. Some people got their money back and many others have posted a lot of complaints on the web claiming they never got a refund nor get the product.

Even though you cannot buy Aakash 2 tablet from stores, if you are really interested in it, you can go for the commercial version of the tablet, which is called UbiSlate 7Ci, sold by UbiSlate. Both Aakash 2 and UbiSlate 7Ci has the same configuration and is manufactured by the same company.

Price of Aakash 2 tablet

Government of India is purchasing the Aakash-2 tablet from DataWind at a bulk purchase price of Rs 2,263. Then Government is giving 50% discount to the students and offering the device at a nominal cost of Rs 1130. Various state government are also encouraged to offer further discounts which may make the device free of cost in some states in India, if things work out in the way it is planned.

As of now, Government plans to sell the tablets only to the students of selected universities and colleges. Others may have to wait several months or even few years before they can get the subsidized Aakash-2 tablets.

Specification of Aakash-2 Tablets

The newly launched Aakash-2 tablets seem to have a slightly different configuration than what was announced the past. According to the previous reports, the new Aakash-2 tablets will have a 700 Mhz processor but the latest announcement says it has a 1Ghz Cortex A8 processor, which makes it significantly faster than the old model.

Compared to the previous model which had a resistive screen, the new Aakash 2 tablet comes with capacitive touch screen, which makes it a lot more comfortable for touch operations.

Another significant improvement in the Aakash 2 tablet is the newer version of Android OS. The previous model was based on Android 2.2, but the Aakash comes with a newer version of Android, which is Android 4.0.

GPRS and 3G

To add to the disappointment, the Aakash 2 tablet does not offer GPRS or 3G facility. You cannot make phone calls from this tablet.

Anup,

You cannot buy the Aakash 2 tablets yet. But you can buy the commercial version of from DataWind. The name is UbiSlate 7Ci. Considering the past experience from DataWind, I suggest you do not rush. You may have a tough time getting the tablet delivered due to their poor tracking and delivery system.

I have placed an order for the UbiSlate 7Ci, which is expected to be delivered within 1 week. I will update if I get the tab within the timeframe.
