How to get refund for Windows 8?

Are you one of those who are frustrated with Windows 8 and want to get your money back? Or, you got a wrong version of Windows 8? Learn how to get a refund.

I ran into couple of threads in the Microsoft official forums where people are asking for ways to get refund for Windows 8. Some of them were simply not happy with the new Windows 8, some of them got a wrong edition of it and some others did not want to disclose why they want a refund. I have purchased and returned several products which include some software as well but never thought about returning an Operating System. Anyway, it appears that many people are exploring this option and so I thought I will share what I found about the money back policy of Microsoft.

Return your Windows 8 within 45 days and get your money back

Microsoft's North America return policy states that all software and hardware products can be returned to the retailer within 45 days from the date of purchase. Obviously, this include Windows 8 returns as well.

However, the official return policy is bit confusing. They have mentioned products can be returned through the retailer but the return address provided in the page is of Microsoft's Return Center. So, if you purchased Windows 8 from stores like BestBuy, Walmart, Amazon or other retailers, it is not clear whether you can return it to Microsoft for refund.

I tried calling the Return Center but could not speak with anyone since it was not normal office hours. However, the system prompted me to leave a voice message and assured a callback within 1 business day.

Windows 8 return policy

According to the official return policy of Microsoft, you can get a refund for Windows 8 within 45 days from the date of purchase. However, there are couple of catches in the return policy, that may eliminate many of the users from getting their money back if they choose to give back their Windows 8 license.

If your Windows 8 is an OEM version, which means it was preloaded with a new computer, you cannot return it to Microsoft for refund. Various computer manufacturers have different policies on refund for the OEM edition of the OS installed on the computer. If you got Windows 8 preinstalled on your computer, you may want to contact the computer manufacturer directly and explore the options for money back. Since computer manufacturers receive the OEM licenses at a very low cost, you may not get the full retail value of Windows 8.

If you received the Windows 8 through volume licensing or subscription, you cannot return the individual Windows 8 license for a refund. In that case, Microsoft recommend you contact the reseller/distributor and discuss the options.

Also, you cannot return Windows 8 if you purchased it online, according to their published return policy. I am bit uncomfortable about this policy since now a days most of the software purchases happen online and if Microsoft does not offer refund for online purchases, that will exclude a bit portion of their consumers. Hopefully, that is just a disclaimer but you can still try to contact the Return center and explore the options.

How to get the refund for your Windows 8

Here are the steps I suggest you to get refund for Windows 8:

1. Read Windows 8 Software License Agreement so that you can answer any queries by the refund specialist.

2. Have your purchase information including your payment receipts ready in front of you.

3. Open your Windows 8 computer and be prepared to refer to it and answer the rep if the computer is in usable condition.

4. Call customer support toll free number.

1-888-673-8624
1-877-673-8889 (TTY Line)

5. Explain your situation and briefly mention why you want a refund. If you just don't like the product, don't hesitate to say that. The return policy does not require you to give a valid reason to return.

If you tried the above steps and like to share your experience, please post it as a comment below.

You can get a refund for an online purchase from Microsoft. Call 877-696-7786 and very quickly and easily get the refund. Seems to be a 24 hour service. Excellent work, Microsoft.

I called that number almost a week ago asking for a refund (But the man helping me had a very, very thick Indian accent, so I had my doubts) And my refund was never issued yet, they said I'd get a verification e-mail for the refund...never did. So I'm about to call back today and not be as polite. I asked several times for a refund, and not help "troubleshooting" and he kept trying to tell me to click this, go to this website, open the Windows installer and I kept telling him I simply wanted a refund because it wouldn't install, even though the "software helper" verified my computer was compatible with Win 8 prior to instillation.

I have sent 4 emails to Microsoft refund center requesting either help, or the procedure to get a refund, regarding my failed download of Windows 8. I have received no replies. I have rang twice and was shuffled around between the customer service and tech support departments with no answer. I have now started a formal dispute with Paypal. Hopefully they can arrange a refund.

Steve,

I am sorry to hear your situation. When I called Microsoft Return center, I thought the process is easy. However, the feedback from you and few others show otherwise. Let us know if you manage to get a refund by disputing with Paypal.

Update to my 1st post.
I received an email from Microsoft today asking me to ring them so a refund could be arranged. I have just done this and the customer service rep raised the credit whilst I waited. She was extremely pleasant and helpful. Is this because of the Paypal dispute? Anyway all's well that ends well, it's just a shame that it took so long to end up back where I started from after so much frustration. Looks like I will be keeping windows 7 for the life of my 3 month old touch screen computer.

Steve,

Good to hear finally you were able to get the refund for Windows 8.

If you don't mind asking this, what was the primary reason you decided to switch back to Windows 7 and get a refund? I believe the reason for most people is the lack of a simple start button on Windows 8, which make them go back to Windows 7.

To be honest, I am still fairly keen to try Windows 8 but after the frustration of having a failed download and several successive failed attempts to re-download, I became tired of trying and just wanted my $14.99 back. Having said this, I have just read an add from my local office works store offering Windows 8 on a dvd for $48.00. This might be the way to go for me.

Has anyone got any UK numbers that I can call in order to get a refund ?

I'm thinking about a refund because of compatibility issues. I'm searching for new drivers but not finding them though my motherboard, an ASUS M2n-e, is listed as compatible. Yet my on board lan isn't working neither is my pci wireless adapter card and the disk drive keeps saying nothings in it when there is. Other than that, while it is confusing I'd be willing to work with it, but no internet no windows 8. I'll spring the extra cash and buy 7 or go to the emergency disk clone I made before installing and keep using xp.

I'm willing to buy a new pci card but I need my wired connection in working order too and if this it whats happening with my hardware I shudder at what will happen when I get around to trying to install my collection of Sims 3 titles, assassin's creed, and my grand theft auto 4.

I purchased a license last week, managed to install 8. My gripes with it are not the fact it is missing a start button, but the whole layout. The metro apps failed to load, the system kept rejecting my devices and crashing. And it wouldn't download updates without presenting an error.

I am planning on getting a refund, biggest waste of money i spent thats for sure. Won't be going back unless i'm forced to.

I bought an open box Toshiba all-in-one computer from BestBuy over a year ago that still had Windows 7, but Window 8 had a offer in that time to upgrade for a small fee. I upgraded the computer to Windows 8. Then, 8.1 came out and I upgraded again. I got the computer to load and reload in an endless loop. After trying to troubleshoot (searching on YouTube for solutions and trying their recommendations), I brought the computer back to Best Buy. They told me to contact Toshiba by phone (I got the number from a website). I ended up having to pay around $30 for the restore disks to go back to Win7. I searched for refunds and got this site. I doubt I can get a refund for the upgrade deal and I'm not even sure it is worth the aggravation at this point (I'll chalk it up as a lesson learned).
