What Windows server 2008 is and when was it launched


Microsoft has launched its Windows server 2008 operating system on 16 May 2007. It was earlier codenamed as Longhorn by Microsoft company. This operating system was under development for many years starting from 2004. After few beta releases, this version was available on 27th February 2008 in the stores for sale.

Features of Windows server 2008


Server core is one of the main features of Windows server 2008. Many frameworks and applications such as .NET framework, Internet Explorer does not fall under server core features. Domain controller, DHCP, and file server roles can be assigned to a server core computer. This version of server operating system was more secure than the previous versions.

Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS) feature allows the administrators to assign roles to the users or clients. It provides effective user management through this advanced feature. ADDS can also be used to install or update the applications on the client computers centrally.

Failover clustering feature also enables the maximum uptime of all applications and services so that users can enjoy the full features at all times. Another great feature of Windows server 2008 is self-healing NTFS which automatically fixes the errors occurred in the hard disk without needing a reboot of PC. Also this OS has a special mechanism SMART to monitor the health of hard disk and it will alert the administrator if it feels that the computer will crash soon.

Windows system resource manager (WSRM) can be used to restrict the user to use particular services or process according to the business rules. Also by using WSRM, we can set the restrictions to the users according to the date also. Another added new feature in this OS is Server Manager. It can be used to manage the server and also various security settings can be implemented in Windows server 2008.

In Windows server 2008, many Group policy standards are improved by Microsoft to make this OS more secure. Also it came with a multi password system by which the administrator can set different passwords for different users or groups. This feature of multi level password is called as granular password settings mechanism.

It has become easy when it comes to resize the hard drive space. While resizing the hard drive of the server, there is no need to stop the services of the server. It has better network access protection than the previous versions of the server OS. Clusters were made to be available at maximum time.

It also has the support for AES encryption technology which made the network more secure and safe. Elliptic cryptography is integrated in this operating system. As a virtual private network feature, Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol was introduced in this OS. Thus, all above features made Windows server 2008 unique and stable OS among the Windows server operating systems.
