Yes, you read it right. The latest news regarding Android is that, in a few months, or a year, we may all have access to Android gaming consoles in our home. Android phones are fuelled by very powerful processors, a little like the ones you might have in your PS3 or Xbox 360. Bundle this in with HDMI output and 1GB of RAM, and you've got the making of a cracking games console. Of course, if it's going to plug into your TV, the expensive touch screen AMOLED displays won't be necessary, nor will the camera, the battery, the GSM be!
It's easy to see how the price of your standard Android phone has gone down to $99. Currently, the price of the Ouya Android console has come down from $500 or so dollars that top Android handsets sell for. The idea is to package these Android consoles in with a wireless controller and send them off for users to play Android games on their TVs. The guys behind the Ouya project say that "Smartphones and tablets are getting all the new titles – they're 'what's hot'. The console market is pushing developers away. We've seen a brain drain. Some of the best, most creative game makers are focused on mobile and social games because these platforms are more developer friendly. The ones who remain focused on console games can't be as creative as they'd like.In other words, Ouya are combining the fun, functionality of home games consoles with the simplicity and accessibility of Android.
The project was launched on Kickstarter, a website which allows the users to invest funds into new start up. Since its launch, it has already secured funds of around $4 million dollars and this number is only going to rise. It's also got more than 20,000 pre-orders already, all of which will have been placed by consumers who had not even heard of the Ouya gaming console just a few days before hand. These are some pretty phenomenal figures for a company with no brand identity or marketing.
In all honesty, it sounds like a fantastic idea. I'm not one of those 20,000 people who have signed up for a console just yet, but I may well be in the coming few days. Android is a fantastic platform when it comes to letting developers have free reign to do what they want and consumers are getting bored of console games. With every generation, world becomes a little bigger and graphics get a little better but nothing really changes. That means, until now, the Ouya may well change the way we game and for that reason alone, I want to be on the Ouya wagon from the very beginning. Sign me up.
