What is Windows 8?


This article is for the people who are new to Windows 8 and do not know what exactly Windows 8 is. I am giving a very high level overview of Windows 8 and how it fits in to the overall Windows OS series.

Windows 8 is the latest operating system from Microsoft. It belong to the family of operating systems that include:

- Windows 95
- Windows 98
- Windows 2000
- Windows ME
- Windows XP
- Windows 2003
- Windows Vista
- Windows 2008
- Windows 7

The new operating system in the series of Windows operating systems is Windows 8.

Windows 8 is similar to its predecessors, but Microsoft calls "Windows Reimagined" since they have made significant improvements to the OS behind the scenes.

One of the cool features of Windows 8 compared to the previous operating systems from Microsoft is, Windows 8 can run on a variety of platforms including desktop computers, laptops, tablet computers and more.

Windows 8 Metro Style Apps


All versions of Windows can run various applications developed for Windows. Windows 8 introduced a new type of applications called "Metro Apps", which are optimized for touch based operations but can work with any input devices including keyboard and mouse. Metro Style apps runs with a single screen in full screen mode with no borders and distracting buttons.
