How to take advantage of free tools from Alexa and help on SEO

Most webmasters and bloggers are familiar with how to use Alexa to check traffic rank of your websites and how to compare them with your competitors. In this article, I will discuss how to take advantage of many free services that are not used by most webmasters and bloggers. Some of the free tools from Alexa can help significantly on SEO.

Almost every blogger know what Alexa is. For most webmasters, it is just an online service to check the traffic rank and statistics of their blog/website and compare with competitors. But there is a lot more Alexa can do for you to better promote and track your websites. If properly used, Alexa can do a lot of help in Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Free services from Alexa

Alexa offers a couple of free services that help in SEO and traffic analysis of websites. Here is the list of free services from Alexa:

1. Free site information and traffic statistics

2. Claim the site and add site information through free Alexa Dashboard access

3. Create custom Alexa toolbar and promote your site

By properly using the free tools, you can improve your site's Alexa rank and also help a bit on the SEO. Many SEO experts use Alexa tools to monitor the progress but the tools themselves can be used to do search engine optimization.

1. Free online Site Traffic Information from Alexa

Almost every blogger and webmaster is familiar with this free service. You can go to Alexa.com and type your URL to see the traffic information. You can even compare the traffic statistics of your website with other websites and find our how your competitors perform compared to your site. Since most bloggers are familiar with this feature, I am not going in to depth on this.

2. Claim your site at Alexa and add additional details to your site information

This is one of the free services that are not utilized by many webmasters. You can go to the Alexa Dashboard and add your sites there. Alexa will guide you through a process to claim your site and once you complete that step, you can add additional details including the owner information. There are 2 ways to claim your ownership of a site:

- Upload a small file which you can download from the dashboard. This small file will have some information about your site and your Alexa account and by uploading it to the root of your site, you are confirming that you have control on your server.

- Add your account information as comment to the header of your home page. Alexa will access your webpage and check if the comment appear there.

Once you confirm your ownership of the site by either one of the above methods, you can use the advanced features and do a better Search Engine Optimization for your site.

You can add multiple sites to your Alexa account through the dashboard.

3. Build your own customized Alexa toolbar for your websites

Alexa allows you to create custom toolbar for your website. You may include links to website, add your logo and customize the toolbar to match your site. Once the custom Alexa toolbar is ready, publish it in your website and allow your regular readers to download and install it.

Advantages of Alexa Toolbar

Alexa depends on a variety of signals including the traffic data from Alexa toolbars. If many people download and install your custom tool bar, it means Alexa will get a lot more information about your website from the people who regularly browse your website. This could signal better Alexa rank for your website. (In the past, Alexa used to give very high weightage for data from toolbar users, however, it has fixed the problem now. The Alexa toolbar is given some weightage but not too high to alter the Alexa ranking significantly).

To get started with creating your custom toolbar, visit the toolbar section in Alexa.

How Alexa can help you on SEO?

Even though Alexa is not an SEO tool, you can use Alexa services to track and improve the search engine ranking of a website. Alexa Traffic Stats shows the keywords that drive traffic to any website. In most cases, these are pretty accurate. You can look at it to find which keywords drive traffic to your site or your competitors and optimize the topics accordingly.

Also, if you use the certified site program in Alexa, you could get 2 backlinks from the Alexa traffic stats page. This will add some SEO value to your site.
