Is Facebook down in India?

Is Facebook down in India? Are you experiencing problems accessing Facebook through Airtel connection in India? It appears that Facebook is blocked and not accessible for Airtel users in India, giving a DNS error. Learn more about the Facebook accessibility issues with Airtel.

Update: I spoke to Airtel and they confirmed this is a technical problem on Airtel side and they are working on a resolution. Airtel is not blocked by Airtel. Only Facebook has been affected by this Airtel technical issue. I would get a call from Airtel once there are any updates on this DNS Error for Facebook in India and I will post it here.

Update 2: You can open now if you switch to Google DNS.Read more on how to switch to Google DNS and open

Update 3: Airtel called me and confirmed the error is resolved now and now Facebook is accessible to the users. I removed the Google DNS settings and confirmed Facebook is not down anymore for me. Facebook was down for about 30 minutes today and the problem is resolved now.

This morning I woke up and tried to open Facebook. I have become more or less an addict to Facebook last few days after the Microsoft Domain dispute against because of the moral support I get from other bloggers in India.

To my surprise, I got an error when I tried to connect to Facebook. Here is the error message I received:

DNS Error

When I try to access Facebook, I am automatically redirected to the URL:

Initially I thought it could be some temporary error and so I switched to my GMail inbox where about 100+ emails are waiting for me. I spent few minutes and deleted all the junk and started reading the important ones. After couple of minutes I tried to take a peek at the Facebook again and found the DNS error is still there.

This made me curious and I started thinking there is something else wrong. I thought it could be some issue with Google Chrome browser and tried to use Internet Explorer and FireFox. Surprisingly, both the browsers gave the same DNA Error when I opened the Facebook page.

At this moment, it is confirmed that I cannot open Facebook from any of the browsers in my computer.

I tried with 3 other computers in my home and all showed the same result. Facebook is not opening with my Airtel internet connection.

Is Facebook blocked by Airtel in India?

Since I was not able to open Facebook with a DNS Error and all other websites were working fine, I did a quick search in Google. If Facebook is down world wide, it could really generate hundreds of blogs and updates quickly. But I could not find any such news posted by anyone else. This confirmed that it is some temporary problem affecting only few users.

So, I logged in to some of my servers in USA and tried to login to Faceook. I was able to open Facebook from my server in USA. This confirmed the problem is only for a limited number of people like me.

Facebook not opening in India

At this moment, Facebook is not opening in India for people using Airtel connection. There is no official announcement from Airtel or Fcebook regarding any legal issues or other reasons for the DNS error.

As of now, if you cannot open Facebook if you are using Airtel connection in India and you will be redirected to the site

It is possible that this is technical problem and Airtel may be working on this. We will keep you posted on the latest developments on this.

Update: Airtel confirmed to me that there is a technical problem through a phone call to Airtel.
