Virtual Machines compatible with Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Windows 8 Consumer Preview is released. Since it it is not a final release, it is recommended to install it on a virtual machine. Read this article to find out the virtual machines, officially supported by Microsoft.

Microsoft has tested a few popular virtualization products and verified the installation of Windows 8 Consumer Preview along with smooth functioning of it. Please note that only basic scenarios are tested and it is practically impossible to go through all possible cases with such products in a short time after releasing Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Virtualization products that are compatible with Windows 8 Consumer Preview

The following VM software products support Windows 8 Consumer Preview:

  • Hyper-V in Windows 8 Developer Preview

  • Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2

  • VMware Workstation 8.0.2 for Windows

  • VirtualBox 4.1.8 for Windows

  • Parallels Workstation 6 for Windows

  • Parallels Desktop 4 for Windows

  • XenDesktop 5.5

  • Non-compatible Virtualization Products

    The following VM software products are tested by Microsoft and found not compatible with Windows 8 CP. It is interesting to note that Microsoft's own Virtual PC and Virtual Server are not compatible with Windows 8 CP.

  • Microsoft Virtual PC (all versions)

  • Microsoft Virtual Server (all versions)

  • Windows 7 XP Mode

  • VMWare Workstation 7.x or older

    Few people have reported compatibility issues with Oracle VM VirtualBox and Windows 8 CP.
