To Note: The Consumer Preview is a pre release version of Windows 8 and is given free to try. As it is not the finished product you should back up data.
As the installation is a little bit difficult, other than burning an ISO image some preparation too is required. To start the procedure, you need around 10 GB of free hard drive space and a USB stick with 4 GB or greater in size of free space. Here the process to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview without burning a DVD is explained as it will help you to create a bootable USB flash drive which contains the Windows 8 Consumer Preview code. Creating a bootable USB drive which includes Windows 8 will be more convenient to install the OS on your tablet or net book PC without a DVD drive or burning a dvd disc.
You can format the USB with FAT32 file system. For this, connect the USB drive to the computer, then right click the drive letter and select 'format'. As the format is finished, now it's the turn to download the Windows 8 Consumer Preview .ISO file and the Windows 7 Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. As the preview comes in an ISO image file, do save the file in your hard disk. Now plug in the USB in to the USB port and install Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. Click the browse button as find .ISO file which you have downloaded.
Just click the open button to convert the .ISO file in to the USB stick. If you have correctly chosen the right USB device, click 'Begin copying'.
Now the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool will format the drive making convenient to copy the Windows 8 installation on to the USB. Depending upon the speed of the computer, the process would take around 10 minutes.
Now, you have successful created a bootable USB, a ready to use Windows 8 OS in it. The USB device will now show 'Windows install'.
Congratulations for the smart work, now you are smart owner of latest windows version.
made it work for Intel Mac machine only, isaenlltd the basic 10.5.6 software by doing a custom install only which amount to 4.5GB, after formatting the drive you end up with 6 GB. I'm able to put all my diagnostic tools on the drive including a tool to clone Mac drives. Since I work in a university that supports 80 iMacs with Bootcamp Windows XP on one half, Mac on the other half, I'm able to boot from my flash drive should one of the workstations fail. In order to make your bootable flash drive you want to partition the drive using Disk Utilities, select the partition tab, then select Other, there you want to change it from Master Boot Record to Apple Gui, then name your drive and load OS 10.5.6 or 10.6 what ever you have available. I'm able to boot a 20 iMac in 45 seconds from this flash drive. Believe me its fast! I wonder if you can put Windows XP on a flash drive than be able to format the slave drive, will have to try that next. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you Dr.Phil SCU
