How to Install Windows 8 on Mac

How to Install Windows 8 on Mac


We all know that Windows 8 Developer Preview was released for general public in September,2011. Many people have downloaded and installed Windows 8 Developer Preview. We have earlier provided an article on how to download and install Windows 8 Developer Preview. Some people have even installed Windows 8 Developer Preview as a dual boot along with Windows 7.

Many of the Mac users are also interested to test drive the new Windows 8 Operating system on their Mac PCs. I am giving the step by step procedure to install Windows 8 Developer Preview on your Mac PC using the Boot Camp Assistant software.

Steps to install Windows 8 Developer Preview on Mac PC


If you want to install Windows 8 Developer Preview you need Windows 8 DVD, ISO or USB. Download Windows 8 Developer Preview ISO.

You will need a USB drive with 8 GB or more capacity and our hour time. We can use the Boot Camp Assistant software which is available on Mac to install Windows 8 Developer Preview on Mac. You should have an Intel-based Mac PC with Boot Camp Assistant version 4.0 or later to install Windows 8 Developer Preview.
Here is a procedure to install Windows 8 Developer Preview on Mac.

  • Step 1: First you need to launch the Boot Camp Assistant Software. To launch it, go to 'Utilities' and click on 'Boot Camp Assistant' to open it.

  • Step 2:Once it is launched, click on 'Continue' button on the introduction screen. You will see a list of options available for your Mac. The following three options will be available.
    1. Create a Windows 7 install disk
    2. Download the latest Windows support software from Apple
    3. Install Windows 7

    If the first option is not available on your Mac, then the reason would be that your computer does not support installing Windows from a USB flash drive. You can select other options available and click on 'Continue' button.

    All the three options are enabled by default. You can select the first option to create a bootable Windows 8 USB flash drive to install Windows 8 directly from USB flash drive.

  • Step 3: If you have not selected the first option above, then you can skip this step. In this step you have to select the Windows 8 ISO file and the USB device that you want to use install windows 8 on your Mac. The Boot Camp Assistant software will create a bootable USB drive for installing Windows 8. Once you select the ISO file and the USB drive, click on 'Continue' button.

    Boot Camp Assistant will take several minutes to create a bootable Windows 8 USB Drive and also downloads the windows support software from Apple. Once bootable Windows 8 USB drive is created, you will get a message saying "Boot Camp Assistant is trying to add new helper tool. Type your password to allow this". Now type the password and click on 'Add helper' button to continue.

  • Step 4: Boot Camp Assistant will now ask you for creating of a partition for Windows. Drag the divider between the partitions to set the size of the partition. It is necessary to set up at least 30 GB for Windows 8 partition. Now click on 'Install" button to start creating the partition and begin installing Windows 8 on Mac. Now your Mac machine will automatically reboot and begin installing Windows 8. You will see "Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created boot drive" message.

    If you have not selected 'Create a Windows 7 Install disk' option in Step 2, then you have to install Windows 8 installation DVD into the tray and click on Install button to start partitioning the drive and install windows. Your Mac machine will automatically reboot to begin installing Windows.

    You can follow the onscreen instructions till you need to select a partition to install Windows 8. When ever asked for selection of partition to install Windows 8, please select the partition named "BOOTCAMP" to install Windows 8.
    Make sure that this partition is formatted. Click 'Next' button to start installing Windows 8 on the BOOTCAMP partition. You can follow the on screen instruction to complete the installation.

  • step 5: Once Windows 8 is installed and running, you have to install Mac-specific drivers and other softwares for Windows 8. The software is on the same USB drive if you have selected 'Download the latest support software from Apple' in Step 2. Open the windows 8 USB drive which was created using the Boot Camp Assistant and open the WindowsSupport folder and double click on setup.exe file to start installing all the drivers and Apple software upgrade.
  • Now when you switch on your Mac computer, you have to hold down the 'Alt' key to see an option to boot into Windows 8 or Mac.


  • When you switch on your Mac, hold down the Alt key or Option key to see an option to boot into Windows or Mac. Good luck!
