How to use Metro interface in Windows 8 OS


In this article, I will explain the detail procedure on how to use the new metro interface of Windows 8 operating system. When we compare Windows 8 with other Windows operating system, it is quite different in UI and features.

As Microsoft already released the developer preview of Windows 8 OS, I think, many of you downloaded and installed Windows 8 operating system. Windows 8 Operating system is all about Metro user interface. Metro user interface is the default interface in the Windows phone 8. Windows 8 is quite different from the remaining Windows operating system.

What is Metro Interface in Windows 8 OS


Metro interface is a tile based interface which is focused on being simple and clean. It has beautiful typography icons instead of normal icons which were shadows and raised button interfaces. In Metro, many tiles are more than an application launcher, they contain data which updates automatically. It may be a weather tile which automatically shows the latest weather report, it may be a news tile which scrolls the latest news from users feeds, it may be a social widget which will show the latest photos from Facebook. It may be any App, which you use daily in your day-to-day activities. Metro interface is idle for touch screen devices, which is also quite usable with keyboard and mouse also.

The main features of Metro user interface is Universal Sharing, Universal search, Hardware acceleration and process sharing.



How to use Metro UI in Windows 8


As soon as you downloaded and installed Windows 8 operating system, the first screen which you saw is the Metro user interface of Windows 8 operating system. Irrespective of system you use, Metro Interface will be the default interface of Windows 8 operating system. Below is the Metro interface of my Windows 8 operating system.

The above screen is the complete replacement for the Windows 7 Taskbar. If you want to find any application on your system, just type the name of the application while you are viewing the main Metro start screen, you will be able to find the application on the screen with in few seconds. You can bring up the Metro Start screen at any moment, to bring back the Metro screen, just press the "Windows" key.

Below are the few Keyboard shortcuts which will be handy when you are using Windows 8 with keyboard and mouse.

Windows+F – Opens File Search
Windows+C – Opens Charms Bar
Windows+I – Opens Settings
Windows+Q – Opens App Search pane
Windows+W – Opens Settings Search app
Windows+Z – Opens App Bar

In the Metro screen, you can easily click and drag the Apps from one place to other on the screen. If your device is touch capable, you can do the same with your fingers. If you right click on any App, you will get an option to unpin the App from the screen.

IF you want to use social application in Windows 8, there is a pre-installed application which is called as "Socialite" which gives access to the News feed and all updates from users contacts and you can also connect with them from the App.

The best part in Windows 8 is there is a App store which organizes Apps in different sections based on user feedback. If you are going through the App store for first time, you may get confused, but one can easily get familiar to the App store with in a few minutes. Once you purchased the Apps, they can be easily downloaded and installed in your PC. Both desktop style Apps and Metro style Apps are available at the same App store, which intern says Microsoft is going to keep both Windows Apps and Tablet Apps at one single store.
