HTML5 Apps: Play Angrybirds in Google Chrome, developed using HTML5

In this article, I will discuss the availability of the popular game Angrybirds on Google Chrome browser as a browser App. Angrybirds is developed using HTML5, the future standard for web development. Learn more about the HTML5 and Angrybirds relation in this article.

Angrybirds is one of the popular games, designed for kids but have thousands of adult players as well. I have never played it before, but the moment I saw the preview online a couple of days ago as part of the availability of Angrybirds in the Chrome App store, I was really impressed. Due to my poor internet services offered by Airtel, I could not play it right away and later completely forgot it.

Angrybirds HTML5 App Yesterday, my 7 year old son had a peek at my laptop and noticed the Angrybirds game on my Chrome browser. His screamed: "Wow! You have Angrybirds". I had never seen him mentioning the Angrybirds game nor seen him playing it in the desktop. However, his enthusiasm inspired me to research more on it.

Angrybirds is developed using HTML5

One of the most interesting things I found was, Angrybirds online game was developed using HTML5. This came as a surprise to me since I was doing a lot of research on HTML5 last couple of days, wrote few HTML5 articles and have been preparing some HTML5 tutorials. I was not expecting such sophisticated applications are already being developed using HTML5 for several reasons, including:

  • HTML 5 is not yet an official standard, but is a standard for future

  • HTML 5 specification is not yet finalized and are subject to change

  • HTML 5 is not fully supported by any browsers. Each browser has various compatibility issues

  • It will be really surprising to see Angrybirds online working in all browsers due to the HTML 5 compatibility issues. As of now, angrybirds game is available only as an App in Google Chrome, so the compatibility with other browsers is not a big concern.

How to play Angrybirds online in Internet Explorer

Since Internet Explorer may not support all the HTML5 tags that are required by Angrybirds, the popular game is not available in IE yet. If you are an Internet Explorer fan, you may have to wait a while. Your current options are limited to:

    1. Install the desktop version of Angrybirds in your computer. There is a free demo edition, but the full edition costs US$5.

    2. Install Google Chrome browser and have fun with your Angrybirds.

Angrybirds desktop version on Windows 7

Angrybirds desktop version works perfectly on Windows 7 computers since they are not developed using HTML5. The desktop version uses the windows application and is compatible with Windows 7. I haven't installed it yet, but planning to try it very soon.

    Angrybirds on Windows 8

Windows 8 supports a new type of applications developed using HTML 5 and Javascript. Since Angrybirds already works well in Google Chrome, we can be sure that it will work as an HTML5 App in Windows 8. However, I am sure they will have to do some tweaks and changes to make it work on a desktop App. It is not yet clear how the HTML5 desktop apps are going to work in Windows 8.

Have fun with Angrybirds on Google Chrome

As part of my HTML5 research, I am going to spend some time exploring Angrybirds and figure out how they have implemented a lot of features. I am sure this game will become my favorite very soon for fun as well as for education purpose. Don't blame me if I become an addict to Angrybirds and stop writing HTML 5 tutorials and articles :-)

NOTE: Even though Angrybirds is developed using HTML5, it still require Flash to run it. It uses some libraries which has some references to Flash and also it is learnt that the Chrome version of Angrybirds online game still depends on some Flash due to limitations of Chrome in supporting HTML5 at this time.
