Add +1 button to help your web pages stand out in Google search results

In this article, I will discuss the +1 button introduced by Google to recommend web pages. I will talk about how the +1 can help improve the ranking of your pages in Google search results.

If you are a webmaster or a website owner, I am sure you would have heard about the +1 introduced by Google. If not, it is not too late. Read further to learn more about the +1 program and how it helps web pages.

What is +1?

+1 from Google is a way to recommend web pages by users. This program allows users to add a recommendation to any web page. +1 means, you are adding one more recommendation to a given web page.

Webmasters can add a +1 button to any webpage allowing readers to click on it and add a recommendation. The more recommendations means more popularity and recommendation for the webpage.

How +1 helps a web page?

When a signed in user search for any topics in Google, the search results will include the +1 recommendations for the pages in the search results. For example, if you search for Windows 8 new features in Google, the pages that appear in normal search results will also show the +1 recommendations for them. In case of signed in users, they will see the +1s from their connections. If the user is not signed in, then the search results will show the total number of +1s received by the page. (Google may decide to change this behavior later.)

If your connections and friends have +1ed any content, you may be more interested in those pages and sites than other sites in the search results. So, the +1 helps you pick the best results based on the +1 recommendation from your connections.

Does +1 help improve the search engine ranking of the web pages?

Google has given very clever answer to this question in their help topics and FAQ. They have not given a clear YES or NO to this query. Instead, they confirm that the +1 will be used as a signal (along with many other signals) to rank a webpage in the search results by your connections. But wait, will it help in overall search results by non-connections? All that Google says is:
This is just one of many signals Google may use to determine a page's relevance and ranking, and we're constantly tweaking and improving our algorithm to improve overall search quality. For +1's, as with any new ranking signal, we'll be starting carefully and learning how those signals affect search quality.

If you read between lines, you may figure out that Google may be considering the number of +1s received as a signal in search engine ranking of any web page. How significant the +1s is unclear at this time.
