How to resolve Symantec LiveUpdate Error LU1803 in Windows 7


This article explains how to resolve Symantec LiveUpdate error code LU1803 is due to a change in the registry value which blocks LiveUpdate from downloading the new registry files in Windows 7

How to resolve Symantec LiveUpdate Error LU1803


Symantec LiveUpdate will download the new virus definition and critical updates from Symantec server frequently or whenever the new definitions are available.

LiveUpdate sometime may encounter some error due to various reasons. One of the error messages is LU1803 error LiveUpdate could not access its settings. The program failed to create either an instance of the LiveUpdate or a LiveUpdate pointer. or LiveUpdate could not access its settings. Error Code: 0x00000000 then you cannot run the LiveUpdate.

Uninstall and Reinstall the LiveUpdate or Symantec antivirus software will not resolve this issue. The application path needs to be modified manually in registry.

Here are the steps to resolve


  • Before making the changes in Windows system registry uninstall the Symantec LiveUpdate and reboot the system once

  • Open the Windows Run prompt by clicking the Windows Startup menu and select the Run prompt from the menu or Press Windows Key + R to open the Run prompt and type regedit command in Run prompt and hit enter to open the Windows registry

  • To open the run prompt
  • Once the windows registry windows Is shown select HKEY_USERS  Software  Microsoft  Windows  Current Version  Explorer  User Shell Folder once the User Shell Folder is selected from the Left side panel in right side window you can the AppData key and it will also the value of the AppData key and the value will show as %APPDATA%

  • Double click the AppData and change the %APPDATA% to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming and then click ok button to make the change to the AppData registry key

  • To modify the registry value
  • Reinstall the Symantec LiveUpdate

  • Repair the install Symantec antivirus or Symantec Endpoint Protection.

  • Once everything is completed Open the Symantec Antivirus software and then run the LiveUpdate to get all the virus definition from the Symantec server to protect your system
