How to check Symantec LiveUpdate is not blocked by Windows Firewall
Symantec is one of the best antivirus software available. New virus definitions will be updated to system using LiveUpdate at least once in 15 days. If we missed out a virus definition then it will be critical that the system could be in risk. Sometimes the Firewall setting may block your LiveUpdate software then LiveUpdate can't communicate with Symantec server to get the new updates, so we need to know whether Firewall is blocking the Symantec LiveUpdate or not.
LiveUpdate requires some ports to download the virus definition files from the Symantec server. LiveUpdate will use Ports 80 for HTTP access, 21 for FTP access and 443 HTTPS access. Download a sample Zip file from Symantec site to ensure the Firewall is not blocking the ports to download the new virus definitions.
Other possible reason could be Symantec LiveUpdate server in maintenance mode.
Download the below file from Symantec web site to check the Firewall is not blocking the Zip files
http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com/livetri.zip
Downloaded livetri.zip file will contain 3 files
Check the below 3 files are in the livetri.zip to ensure that the files are not blocked by the system Firewall.
If you find the 3 files in the zip file and also make sure that the files are not empty, if so then those files are not blocked by Firewall. Firewall will show an error if the files are modified by the Firewall. If all the files are present in the zip and the files are not modified then the Firewall is not blocking the LiveUpdate and try continuing with LiveUpdate
If the files are deleted or modified by Firewall then you cannot do LiveUpdate until you fix the Firewall problem.
