IIS Developer Express Problems and Solutions

In this article, I will explain some of the anticipated problems with the side by side installation of IIS Express with full version of IIS.

I have no doubt, the .NET development community will welcome the move by Microsoft to offer a light weight version of IIS called "IIS Developer Express". This came out as a great news for ASP.NET developers like me.

But is IIS Developer Express installation going to be a very smooth experience for developers? What are the problems every one is going to see? Are there lot of errors expected?

When any new software is released, one of these could happen:

1. Tech geeks will wait for the first available beta and installation it on their computer immediately.

2. Developers like me would take a wait and watch aproach. We do not want our computers to go down due to the problems in the new software and end up spending hours figuring out various issues.

I wouldn't blame the first category of people as well. It is typical that new software will have it's problems, but these people get an opportunity to get first hand experience with the new product and report problems to Microsoft.

Once Microsoft announce the beta release of IIS Developer Express, they will be keenly watching the community sites looking for problems and errors reported. Typically, the beta product will be reasonably stable, but the installers may not offer the same smooth experience.

IIS Developer Express errors and problems

Even though the early news from ScottGu indicates side by side installation support and a smooth experience, I am sure they wouldn't have got an opportunity to test a lot of scenarios. Many Windows 7 users are home users and they would have a variety of software installed in their computer. It may take a while to figure out what kind of conflicts the IIS Developer Express edition is going to present with all such software.

I trust that Microsoft will make reasonable efforts to ensure that IIS Developer Express will not conflict with IIS full version of ASP.NET/Visual Studio buil in Web server, but we are going to find it out soon!
