How to delete 'index.dat' file in Windows


index.dat file included in cookies is impossible to delete under Windows and contains all traces of surfing

While deleting cookies, most of you must have noticed that index.dat file is impossible to delete. This file stores all the information about your surfing history, which can be accessed easily even after you delete all the traces from cookies, temporary files and history!

An alternative to delete this file is by using advanced boot options by pressing F5 or F8 while booting. Choose 'safe mode with command prompt' and log in as administrator. Now you can delete the file without windows interruption.

1. Go to root C:\ by typing CD\
2. Type del index.dat /s and press enter

This will delete all the files named index.dat permanently.

On normal boot up, this will be created again but blank until you start browsing again.
