The digital age or information age is something that has made human life easier in the most ways possible. One such little gift of this digital era is digital money transfer methods that are widely favored for their convenience and seamless nature. These cashless transactions can be conducted through various channels. India's digital payment app UPI stands for Unified Payment Interface is also a game changer in the field of digital transactions. UPI made cashless transactions much easier for Indians since it was the first step taken by their government in this direction. UPI is integrated into several Indian apps including Google Pay, Phone Pay, and Fi Money. There are no charges associated with making payments on any of these platforms. You can do much more with UPI than just make instant transfers. In addition to checking your transaction history and account balance, UPI-based mobile apps offer much more.

Originally released only for domestic use, this payment method has become the preferred payment method but is now available worldwide. Now the best thing is that UPI is not limited to India only, you can use the services during your foreign trips to several countries including UAE, UK, France, Bhutan, Nepal, South Korea, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Oman and Japan. You can therefore opt not to convert your Indian currency rupees into the local currency of the country you are planning to travel to.

Step-By-Step Guide to Using UPI Abroad

You can use apps such as Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Phone Pay, and more to make payments in countries that support UPI. Now travelling overseas and shopping abroad will be easier and safer with these apps using UPI IDs or bank account numbers. Let's see how to use them abroad step-by-step:

Step-1 You will first need to download an app supported by UPI such as Google Pay, Amazon Pay Paytm, etc.

Step-2 Now select International UPI Transaction after opening the app.

Step-3 Once that's done your Indian bank account details need to be registered next.

Step-4 You are now ready to link your account.

Step-5 Now it is necessary to provide the recipient's details after linking the bank account to send the money. Details such as their bank account number BIC and IBAN and the amount and currency needed to transfer are included.

Step-6 Once the transaction has been completed, a confirmation message will be sent to your registered number.

In addition to foreign exchange fees and conversion fees, UPI transactions also incur other charges. Therefore confirm the transaction but also take note of the potential fees.

Bottom Line

The increased demand for international UPI payment has become apparent after domestic use. This is why the Indian government has made it available in many countries. Countries like Sri Lanka and Mauritius are also on the list where UPI can be used now to make transactions. However, it is noteworthy that the facility is still rolling out in several countries and the transaction fees may also vary from country to country.
