How to install and configure Windows XP in a perfect way

As I am a hardware engineer, many of my clients ask me about installing Windows XP. I have summarized how to install Windows XP safely in your computer without causing any issues.

How to safely setup Windows XP on your Computers

So here I am writing a good step by step tutorial on How to setup Windows XP on your computers.

If you have a new computer and want to setup Windows Xp on your system, you need three CD’s first the first one is win98 bootable, and second the Windows XP License CD, and your System Configuration CD in which you get all drivers required for your PC, the Mother Board CD comes with your computer.

First start your PC with Win98 bootable CD, before that check your BIOS to set the startup drive option to be CD and then HDD.

When you start your pc using the Win98 bootable CD, you will get A: prompt on your screen, Type FDISK and press ENTER, this will guide you to create partitions step by step, create at least four partitions say C the primary, and D, E, and F as your extension disks, And keep in mind that it should create the partition as FAT32, FAT32 is need for installing our backup software which I will guide you later in this post.

After creating all four partitions, format each one by giving names for the volumes, C as MY Windows, D as My Programs, E as My Documents and F as My Soft wares.

I will guide you later why I am recommending this name for your volume names later.

After formatting all the disks, restart your system with your Windows Xp CD, The setup starts automatically and step-by-step read the information carefully and complete the process systematically, again don’t forget to keep your partitions as FAT32.

It takes up to approximately 45 minutes to complete the Windows Xp Installation process as per our system configurations.

Name your computer as MYMAGICBOX or any thing which you like MYMAGICBOX is preferable and NAME your user as MYWINXP or YOUR NAME in the installation process.

After your final restart when you complete the Windows Xp setup, do the following things to make your pc run faster.

First: right click on the taskbar at the bottom and click on properties.

Remove the auto-hide taskbar tick
Remove the group similar taskbar buttons tick
Remove the show quick launch tick

Remove hide inactive icons tick and keep all other as ticked right.

Then go to the start menu option on the same dialog box itself, you will see two radio button, Start menu and Classic Star Menu, select the Start menu and click on the customize button, Make number of programs on start menu to 0 and click on the Clear List and click on OK.

Then click on the advance button in the same dialog box and remove list my most recently opened documents and click on clear list and OK.

Now go to control panel and double click on "SECURITY CENTER" Look for "Manage security center settings for:

And click on Windows firewall - make it off and click on advanced tab and remove all ticked options.

And again click on Automatic updates below the security center settings for: and Turn off the Automatic Updates option.

Now the next step on your desktop of your computer, Right Click on your MY Computer and select properties, Click on the System Restore and Turn off system restore on all drives, click on apply and close it.

Right click any where on your blank desktop and select properties, and select the screen saver tab, set the screen saver to none, and then click on the Power button below, and set all the options to NEVER and press OK.

Now comes some Tweaking to make your Windows XP Runs Faster and smoother.

1. Right click on your "My Documents" Icon on your desktop and delete all the text and Type E: in the target box press OK, this shifts your My Documents folder to your E Drive, which is best to save space on your C drive and there is no risk of deleting your files when some problems occur on your Operating system.

2. Now Install the Mother Board drivers on your system by using your Mother Board Drivers CD. After completing all the drivers’ installation process restart your pc and make sure all your drivers are working properly by right clicking on your MY Computer, then on the Hardware Tab and then on the Device manager Button. You will find yellow marks if some drivers are not installed or not installed properly, Install them manually if not installed.

3. After completing the driver installation process, restart your system and install all other required soft wares what you need like MS OFFICE, Extra Audio Players, VLC Player, Adobe Readers, WinZip etc. While installing these soft wares just change the path of installation during the process to D: don’t install these soft wares on C: just Change the C: to D: and leave all the things as it is while installing the soft wares, this also saves the disk space on C: and the soft wares installed will come to D: Partition and it will make run your system faster and smoother.

4. Restart the system again after completing all the installation process and now click on the START Button, then click on RUN and type down "Prefetch" in the box and press OK, a windows opens with path "C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch" select all files and delete them, this is just taking space on your hard drive.

Again Click on START Button, then click on RUN and type "TEMP" another window opens showing the path "C:\WINDOWS\Temp" again select all files in the window and delete them all.

Make sure to empty your trash after completing this deleting process. And now again click on the START Button, RUN, and type MSCONFIG, and select the SERVICES TAB and Click on the "HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES" keep it clicked don’t remove the tick, and unselect all the other things above.

Then go to startup tab in the same windows and click on disable all.

Press ok and restart your system, after restarting again a dialog box comes on your screen select the tick mark and close it.

Now you are completed with your correct system installation process.

Final step is to take the backup of this working system.

Copy "GHOST.EXE" file from Internet or you will find it on old dos win98 CD’s etc. to your F: drive or MY SOFTWARES or MY BACKUP Disk whatever you named it. And restart your system with win98 CD again.

This will give you A: prompt now type F: and run the GHOST.EXE file from DOS Prompt and create the backup by following the procedure on the screen. I will write the full process of using ghost in later article. Keep reading....
