Can Generative AI cloud replace artists from the creative industry?

Generative AI creating art is one of the much-talked-about topics nowadays. But the question is if it can really replace artists from the creative industry. In this article, we tried addressing many such assumptions. Read on to know more.

It's writing codes, songs, passing exams, and doing almost everything you can think of technically. It has become a crucial part of your daily discussions from your dinner table to the office conference room. Yes, you got it right we are talking about the hot topic of Artificial Intelligence which is working beyond our imagination sometimes. We all know that the advancement of Artificial Intelligence has been creating a buzz for a while now and trending everywhere for innovations every day. Generative AI is a new addition to this AI umbrella after showing significant growth in other sectors. The entry of AI into the creative industry which encompasses writing, art, film, music, etc has stirred a new debate among artists and intellectuals. Organizations are falling for the new-invented technology to save expenses and manpower and on the other hand, it's giving nightmares to every professional right from a highly talented software engineer to a creative artist. Many professionals are pursuing short-term courses to upgrade their skills and stay relevant in the job market. Thus, demand for such upskill courses has risen many folds in the past years.

So, is Generative AI a threat to creative professionals like artists and writers? AI has swiftly made space for itself but this honestly doesn't mean that the days of human professionals are only numbered. On the contrary, it can help you take your creativity to the next level.

What is Generative AI and What Exactly Does it Do?

Generative AI is another branch of Artificial Intelligence, that works on a set of algorithms to create or generate images, text, content, etc. Any prompt that an AI system can understand can be used as input for Generative AI including videos, designs, musical notes, or any other input. The simpler new user interface of Generative AI is the reason more and more people getting attracted to it as it can write poetry, codes, email, and captions for your social media post and create images in no time. It works on various outputs rather than just making predictions on the existing data. As you provide feedback, you can further customize the generated content by specifying the style and other elements you wish to reflect.

Why Generative AI Can't Replace Artists?

  • Creativity: Creativity is a God's gift even though not all humans can be equally creative so how can AI create art? This is something that develops with time and experience and even grows better with time. Machines, on the contrary, work on what they have been trained on. Artists can imagine and generate ideas but computers can't replace the ideas. It's as simple as AI can not produce art. It requires artists to create excellent art and not just an object. However, better integration of this technology with artists' tools can help them get closer to a breakthrough.

  • Spontaneity: The machines are trained by humans and unfortunately, they can only work based on the data they have been fed with. In other words, the limits of AI are determined by the training data that it has access to. Consequently, the pattern found in the training data is the only source for generative AI applications' content creation. On the other side, the human mind is capable of coming up with new and original ideas on the spot. Altogether, the ability to think out of the box is one of the most important aspects of human creativity. Spontaneity is an important factor in the human mind.

  • Human Touch and Emotions: Only an artist can understand or remember what he went through when created art or content thus all his creations have a precious human touch. Art can be a clear manifestation of emotions, feelings, experiences, and thoughts that AI completely lacks. An artist's emotions and thoughts may be the source of inspiration for all his work most of the time that can't be replicated by AI. Moreover, human creations always have room for improvement and keep doing updates as per requirements. Unlike human minds, AI doesn't learn from its failure to grow further. So, the human touch can't be integrated into the AI machines.

  • Discipline: At once you may get a thought who else can be more disciplined than a machine as it follows all your commands? But can machines follow a disciplined routine of practicing to sharpen their skills? Certainly not. Humans are disciplined by nature and they work on their mastery without fail. Moreover, the essence of human existence is effectively captured by the art of disciplined artists through the ability to translate and communicate meaningful experiences.

What Do Experts Have to Say?

Experts are in no hurry to reach a conclusion about generative AI being good or bad. They are still divided over the issue if generative AI will be able to replicate artists. Those in favor feel that the use of machine learning algorithms on vast data sets allows AI tools to create original sounds, images, and texts. In contrast to human designers, the systems produce work more rapidly and at a lower cost and arguably with comparable quality. The other half of the experts feel that the satisfaction and solace that one finds in making and experiencing beautiful art cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence. This is also important to note that these generative AI models can also be problematic at times because their data comes from the entire information available on the internet. Content, images, and other information that are protected by the copyright and may have been used without informing the owner are included in this category. In the end, the field of art is vast and versatile and there are several aspects to it that are still out of the AI system's capabilities.

This technology has been at the receiving end of late for its so-called sexist and racist conventions because the system carries various assumptions from its training data. Apart from this, AI-generated images have also led to the spread of fake news on social media platforms. Despite all these flaws, there is one truth art could be next on the list of AI after replacing human professionals in several sectors. Every week or two a new AI platform is launched just to omit the flaws mentioned above and get a better and improved version of the technology.

So, is AI a friend or a foe? We cant draw a conclusion about this as the field experts have a difference of opinion about AI taking over the field of creativity. However, we need to understand that humans still play an important role in all industries including creativity but AI can help them achieve new heights by adding to their work. So, while those who are looking for purely original creations will continue giving work to human content creators, those who are on low budgets and aren't so hyped up about originality, ethics and top quality can start saving on art creation by using AI.
