FreeStyle Libre 2 app compatible phones

FreeStyle Libre 2 is an app you can download to your smartphone that helps you monitor your glucose levels. There are only a few mobile devices and operating systems that are compatible with FreeStyle Libre 2. Before using the app, check out this post for more information about device compatibility.

Managing diabetes has become easier with medical technology like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). Wearable CGMs measure blood sugar levels continuously throughout a 10- to 14-day period (depending on the device), and need to be applied once weekly (depending on the device). It's now easier than ever to manage diabetes with CGMs since you can pair them directly with a compatible smartphone.

You can wear the FreeStyle Libre 2 CGM on the back of your arm or torso, sending your blood sugar readings to a hand-held monitor in real-time. Your FSL 2 readings can also be sent directly to your phone and you can view your data in real-time!

Apply the sensor to the back of your upper arm, scan it with your app, and you'll get your latest glucose value, including a trend arrow and an 8-hour historical graph of your glucose in response to food, exercise, and other factors. It's hard to imagine how FreeStyle Libre technology could disappoint those who still test their glucose with routine fingersticks2. Staying in the range is likely to be easier with these apps.

Why Should You Use the Mobile App?

Living with diabetes can be challenging, whether you're just learning the ropes or have been managing it for years. One more thing to add to the list is carrying around diabetes "diaper bags" of supplies. The mobile app for your CGM will alleviate the burden of carrying around supplies while tracking your blood sugar levels throughout the day. It makes sense to use the mobile app since most people always have their phones with them. The device also eliminates the need for a hand-held CGM receiver, thereby reducing costs.

The use of a CGM mobile app can make tracking your blood sugar levels more convenient, but there are some hurdles you'll need to overcome.

Not All Smartphones Are Smart

It is possible that your smartphone, despite being technically a "smartphone", will not be compatible with the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor. Bluetooth technology connects the FSL 2 sensor to your phone, but your phone needs a specific operating system to make that connection work. It is important to make sure your new phone is compatible with your sensor before you purchase it. You'll need to use the hand-held receiver if it isn't.

FreeStyle Libre 2 App Compatible Phones

NFC-enabled smartphones running Android OS 5.0 or higher and iPhone 7 or later running iOS 11 or later are compatible with FreeStyle Libre 2.

  1. Google Pixel 3 XL: Google Pixel 3 XL works fine with Freestyle Libre. The Pixel 3 XL is on their list of tested and approved phones. Other than this, Google pixel 3xl also works well together with the FSL. The app is also supported by Google Pixel, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL.

  2. iPhone 13: The FreeStyle Libre 2 App is compatible with iPhone 13. Some people, however, have experienced issues with Apple phones as well. Uninstalling the app and reinstalling it has helped many users while some others have found a solution by resetting their Bluetooth settings. The FSL also supports iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X, XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 12 Mini, and SE (2020).

  3. Samsung S21 Ultra: This Samsung device also goes well with FreeStyle Libre 2 App. It has mixed kinds of feedback from the FreeStyle Libre 2 users. While many of them complain of sensor rapid failure. However, the reasons for sensor failure could vary. In many cases, it could be due to your blood sugar rising and falling faster than usual and not due to mobile compatibility. You may also face problems due to Bluetooth settings. Samsung Galaxy A51 and J5 Pro also work fine with FSL apart from Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, S8, S8+, S9, S10, A32 5G, and A52 5G.

  4. Sony Xperia: Among others, Sony Xperia 1, Xperia 5, Xperia 8 and Xperia 10 II are also compatible with FreeStyle Libre 2 App. The only thing is that sometimes hypoglycemia alarms may not be working properly. Otherwise, they work fine with the app.

  5. LG Nexus 5X: This LG mobile is also on the list of compatible phones prepared by Abbott and it goes well with FreeStyle Libre 2. Mentioned above are a few of the mobiles that are compatible FreeStyle Libre 2 App. Yet, it is right to mention here that it is not easy for Abbott to test compatibility with all models of phones combined with all the versions of the operating system.

Phone System Upgrades

Your phone may be compatible now, but that could change if you update its software. You may notice that your smartphone's sensor is not connected to your phone if you perform regular maintenance software upgrades. If your phone does a software upgrade, the FSL 2 mobile app may appear with a pop-up notification indicating any compatibility errors. It is always possible to disable automatic updates and adjust your phone's settings so that the app does not get updated automatically.

What Happens If I Get a New Phone?

Your old data will not be carried over to your new phone if you purchase a new one that is compatible with your sensor. Data from your old phone will only be visible in the desktop app, LibreView, while new data will be collected and displayed on your new phone.

Final Thoughts

The FreeStyle Libre 2 can be used with the mobile app to make living with diabetes a bit easier. You can make faster decisions if you get real-time readings from your sensor, such as eating a snack to treat low blood sugar or walking to bring down a high. When using your smartphone as a sensor, make sure that your phone battery is charged so you won't be left with a dead phone and no way to track your blood sugar levels.
