How to achieve optimal internal PC cable management

Read this article for the best practices for cable management in your PC. Know how to plan and execute your PC building with proper cable management and the right tools required for this task.

Although there's no single way to manage the cables inside your computer system, there are definitely a few best practises that every owner or builder should be aware of. Good cable management means so much more than you think. It can improve the airflow and cooling as well as offer a better aesthetic for those who have transparent cases.

Having a positive approach to cable management before you begin your build, will ensure all components are securely in place and connected correctly. We've put together a nifty step by step guide on how to approach and implement professional looking cable management within your PC.

The planning process

First things first, your computer case. When choosing a case you'll need to check for openings around where the motherboard will be situated, generally speaking, the more openings there are the better! You want to be looking for a case that is known for excellent cable management and for high airflow. You'll also need to check the room behind the motherboard mounting place, as you'll be able to put more cords behind this.

The second thing you'll need is a power supply. You'll want something that's got quality nylon braiding or wires, and that also has detachable PCI-E and peripheral molex cables because let's face it, there's no need for more cables than you actually need! Getting the right power supply can also mean you'll be able to use it for build after build too!

The tools

There are also a few additional things you'll need to make sure you're ready to go. These include:

Your knowledge

Building a PC is not for the faint-hearted. It's a difficult and complex process that can take time to master. With the right tools in place before you start, it can become easier, but brushing up on your knowledge beforehand is essential.

If you're building from scratch, here are a number of straightforward steps that you can follow in the journey to becoming a master builder.
  1. Dissemble your case by taking off both side panels and the front panel.
  2. Add your power supply and motherboard into the case
  3. If you have fans that need to be installed, you can choose to do this before step 2, but you'll need to remove the molex adapters as these go in later
  4. Find a place in your case to hide the fan molex plugs – this is part of ensuring you have the best cable management possible
  5. Start putting all the wires through the holes you want them in and plug them in – we'd recommend starting with the largest cords
  6. Lengthen and modify cords if necessary
  7. Probably the most important step of them all – make everything look neat and tidy
  8. Cover the holes – it's a simple process that looks good in your case and also hides the cords
  9. Complete your molex hider cage
  10. Instal the SATA cords – it's best to put these in last because they can get in the way
  11. Add your video card

Although the process may seem long, it's crucial to follow the steps in this order to make sure you're able to hide and tuck away your cables neatly for the best cable management possible!
