How to migrate emails from Outlook or Yahoo to Gmail

If you want to import all your mails and contacts from Outlook or Yahoo to Gmail, then give thanks to Google who has made the process so easy for its users. Follow this guide step-by-step for migrating your emails to Gmail.

Note: Make sure all the emails that you want to transfer to Gmail are in your primary inbox, i.e. if you want any deleted emails transferred, then first go to the trash and recover those emails, then only do this migration.

Import Mail and Contacts from Outlook or Yahoo to Gmail

  • Step 1: Open Gmail and select the gear icon in the top-right section just below your Google display picture, and select Settings from the dropdown menu.

  • Step 2: Go to Accounts and Import

  • Step 3: You can find Import mail and contacts column and select Import mail and contacts.

  • Step 4: A popup window will open up, and type your email address under the What account do you want to import from?. Select Continue after entering your email address. Remember not to close the first popup window as we will return to that window after giving the required permissions in Outlook.

  • Sign in window for other email addresses
  • Step 5: Now another window will open up asking you to sign into the other email account (Outlook or Yahoo in this case). Enter your email id and password (of your Outlook or Yahoo account).

  • Step 6: Google uses the ShuttleCloud API to migrate emails from other accounts to Gmail. Therefore Microsoft (in the case of Outlook) or Yahoo asks our permission to grant ShuttleCloud access to our outlook account. Select Yes.

  • Step 7: You can now select the import options that you want and they are: Import contacts, Import mail, and Import new mail for the next 30 days.

  • Step 8: Click Start Import and then Ok.
The import process will now start and you can continue your work and all the importing will be done without your assistance. If you want to check the progress of your import, then go to Setting->Accounts and Import->Import Mail and contacts, here you can find if the process is complete or not. If you want to add another email address, just select the Import from another address option and repeat all the above steps.

If you want to just use Gmail all the time, then you can forward the emails from Outlook or Yahoo to Gmail, so that every new mail will be forwarded to your Gmail account, hence making Gmail your universal account. Wondering how to do it, then follow the following steps:

Forwarding Yahoo mails to Gmail

  • Step 1: Login to your Yahoo account.

  • Step 2: Select Settings from the dropdown menu by clicking on the gear icon present in the top right section.

  • Step 3: Go to Accounts section

  • Step 4: Select the Yahoo account that you want your emails to be forwarded from.

  • Step 5: Go down the page and find the Access your Yahoo Mail elsewhere section and enable the Forward option.

  • Step 6: Enter the Gmail account address that you have used early for importing emails and choose Store and Forward or Store and forward and mark as read( in the second option the mail will be marked as read in Yahoo mail.

  • Step 7: Click Verify and login to your Gmail account and click the verification link sent by Yahoo to confirm the forward settings.

  • Step 8: Go back to the Yahoo settings page and select save. Now all the new mails will be forwarded to your Gmail account.

If you want to send emails from the email address of Outlook or Yahoo, then open Gmail and select Compose and in the From section just select the email address that you want to send email from. Only the email account that you have imported in the previous steps will be visible here.


By now you would be able to see transfer all your Outlook or(and) Yahoo mails to your Gmail account and if the forwarder is also set, then you can manage all your email accounts from Gmail itself.
