Have you applied for a new PAN card or opted for the corrections on your PAN card? It can take a considerable time for the PAN card to be printed and delivered to you. The Income Tax Department has introduced a new option to download your e-PAN with ease from the official source.

The Income Tax department has learnt the importance and practicability of the electronic document. In line with the UIDAI which treats both the e-Aadhar card and the physical Agadar card as valid documents, the Income-tax Department has now made it possible to download your e-PAN card and use it for all practical purposes.

What is e-PAN card?


A PAN Card refers to your permanent account number with the income tax department. It is a unique ten-digit identification number that consists of alphanumeric codes. It has been made compulsory documentation for each and every financial transaction you would be conducting. Whether an individual or a business, the PAN card has been made mandatory for all the tax purposes.

You can apply for the PAN card through the NSDL website or UTIITSL portal. The availability of an online application makes it completely hassle-free. The hard copy of the PAN is typically delivered within the period of 45 days from the date of application. However, you can download the e-PAN, which would be a valid document for all the practical purposes. Do note, however, that your PAN should be generated before you can actually opt for the e-PAN.

An e-PAN is the virtual PAN card that consists of all the AN details of the applicant. You should be able to download it from either of the above portals we mentioned. You can submit the e-PAN for verification wherever the PAN details are required.

How to download e-PAN online?


Income Tax Department has two recognised bodies that can generate and issue a PAN card - NSDL-TIN (National Securities Depository Limited) and UTI-ITSL (UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Limited). Please note that you can download the e-PAN through the same portal from where you have applied for the PAN card. For instance, if you have applied through NSDL, you will get the option to download e-PAN directly from the site. If you want to download it from UTI-ITSL, you will need to request a PAN reprint request on the portal before you can download the e-PAN. This holds true the other way as well.

How to download e-PAN from NSDL-TIN?


You have two options to download your e-PAN. You can either use the PAN acknowledgement number if you do not know your PAN number, or the PAN number itself. Please note the request for e-PAN will not be entertained after the expiry of 30 days from the date of application. You can even specify while applying for the new PAN card if you do not want the had copy to be delivered.

Follow the steps here below -
  • Visit the official e-PAN download page here.

  • Enter your 15 digit application acknowledgement number. You would have received it when applying for the PAN card.
  • Enter the Cpatcha details.
  • The next page will display the email ID and mobile number registered with the Income Tax Department. Click on Generate OTP.

  • On the next page, you should ge the option to download the PDF document. Click on the option Download PDF.
The downloaded PDF document refers contains your e-PAN. Please note that it will be password protected. The password would be your date of birth (or the date of incorporation in case of a business) in the format DDMMYYYY.

The second option would be to download the e-PAN using your PAN card number. If you already know your PAN number and have not yet received the physical PAN card, you may flow the steps here below =

  • Confirm the Captcha and click on Submit.
  • In the next page, your email ID and mobile number registered with the income tax department will be displayed.
  • Check the appropriate options receiving the OTP. You can choose to receive OTP either on an email address, mobile number or both.
  • Click on Generate OTP.
  • Enter the OTP you received on the specified channel on the next page.
  • Once your OTP is validated, you will need to make a payment of Rs. 8.26 and you can easily download the e-PAN.


How to Download ePAN from UTI-ITSL Portal?


The UTI-ITSL Portal is the alternative option for downloading the e-PAN. The portal can be used for making applications for the new PAN card or requesting corrections. The portal also lets you download the e-PAN for your needs.

Here is how you would be able to download the e-PAN from UTI-ITSL Portal -
  • Visit the e-PAN download page on UTI-ITSL Portal.

  • Enter the details like PAN card number, date of birth or date of incorporation and the Captcha codes.
  • On the next page, confirm the mobile number and email address and click on Get OTP.
  • Confirm the OTP and you will be taken to a payment page where you would need to make a payment of Rs. 8.26.

Anything else you need to know about e-PAN?


Well, several apps claim to offer the e-PAN functionality. Please refrain from using them. The only options you can use to download the e-PAN would be through the two portals that we have outlined in the above discussion.
The fees of Rs. 8.26 will be levied only if the PAN card has been issued more than a month ago. If you are applying for e-PAN within 30 days of applying for the PAN card or PAN correction, the services will be available for free.
The e-PAN will be a valid document for all practical purposes, and the e-PAN and the physical PAN cards can be used interchangeably.
