Maruti Alto 800 2019 Performance

With the forthcoming BS-VI emission standards that are going to come into effect in India in April next year, all car manufacturers need to either discontinue some of their models or upgrade them with cleaner engines. Maruti Suzuki has decided to adopt the second method for one of its best-selling vehicles. Under the hood of the Maruti Alto 800 2019 is a 0.8-litre three-cylinder F8D petrol motor which is good for a maximum power/torque output of 48 bhp at 6,000 rpm/69 Nm at 3,500 rpm. The transmission duties are undertaken by a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The engine appears to be retained from the previous model, so many of you might wonder how it can help the vehicle become BS-VI-compliant. Therefore, it is worth mentioning here that the three-pot mill has received a new exhaust system and an updated ECU for achieving BSVI compliance. Actually, Maruti has updated the software and hardware of the engine to bring about a dramatic decrease of 25% in the Nitrogen Oxide (NoX) emission from the car, helping it become the first entry-level hatchback in India to adhere to the upcoming BS-VI standards. Moreover, with 95% recoverable and 85% recyclable components, the new Alto 800 also satisfies the End of Life Vehicles (ELV) regulations.

However, this engine is not as fuel efficient as the previous unit. In comparison with the unit which powered the previous model, the updated motor of the new model offers over 10 per cent lesser fuel efficiency. While the previous model had an ARAI-rated FE of 24.7 km/l, the new model delivers only 22.05 km/l.

Maruti Alto 800 2019 Verdict

With all the upgrades, especially in the safety features and specifications department, the Maruti Alto 800 2019 has been made compliant with both the updated safety and the upcoming BS-VI emission norms. Thanks to these updates, its price has also experienced a slight hike, making it more expensive than both its predecessor and its competitors.
Maruti-alto-800-2019-front-studio-imageThanks to the new standard safety features and the BS-VI-compliant engine, the Alto 800 looks all set to continue dominating the entry-level car market.

By the looks of it, the Maruti Alto 800 should continue to dominate the Indian entry-level hatchback segment. Of course, the largest Indian auto manufacturer has made the right decision to upgrade the hatchback instead of discontinuing it and introducing a brand-new model hastily. Moreover, the early introduction of a future-proof model in the entry segment should pave the way for other car manufacturers to follow suit. Hence, don't be too surprised to see the updated versions of the Kwid and the redi-GO being introduced in the near future. As for the 2019 Alto 800, it looks all set to continue writing the unparalleled success story of the Alto moniker in India.
