Guide on how to choose the cheapest TV pack on DishTV or Videocon D2H?

Are you a D2H subscriber and looking for ways on how to change your TV pack as per the new TRAI guidelines? Well, TRAI and several service providers have made it easy for the subscribers to make the right choice.

As we all are aware of, TRAI has devised new guidelines where a subscriber can choose only those channels that you actually want to watch - without having to pay for the ones you do not want to watch. What do these new guidelines mean? You know your service provider gives you access to several channels, of which you watch only a few of them. The new TRAI tariff policy provides you access to the channels you want to watch keeping the rest of them out of your bouquet.

D2h, a part of the Essel Group owned DishTV DTH service, is a popular DTH service and was formerly known as Videocon D2H. Just the way most of the DTH service providers and Cable operators across the nation have come up with plans and bouquets, it too has designed the plans to make it easy for the customers to choose their channels.

Note: Going ahead we will only be mentioning D2H, but the process for channel selection is same in DishTV as well.

Base packs on D2H

In line with the TRAI guidelines, D2H has come up base packs adding up the most watched channels. The service provider calls them D2H Combos.

You can find the detailed pack details as recommended by the service provider here. To begin with, you have access to two packs for the basic channels of 100 channels. These packs comprise of free channels alone, and you need to pay only Network Capacity Fee to watch them. The pack is charged at Rs. 154 per month inclusive of all taxes.

Over the free pack, you can choose the combos of your choice for watching the pay channels. D2H has made sure that most of the recommended Combo packs come with the channels most watched by their subscribers. However, if you find that any of the channels you watch are not available on your pack, you can call up the service provider to add or drop the channels to the base pack. In fact, the concept called Base Pack does not exist anymore.

This regime, however, has a downside to it - at least as of now. The broadcasters have priced their top end channels at much higher prices as Rs. 19 per channel for both SD and HD quality. This is true of the channels like Star Plus, Colors, and Zee TV. This has brought customers to a situation where they will be spending more money for the same number or choice of the channels that they have been watching so far.

However, TRAI expects the channel prices to come down in around three to four months as it ascertains that the subscribers will not opt for high priced options and thus the broadcasters suffer revenue loss. This may be a pure speculation as these top end channels have a cult fan base and people will subscribe them even after the initial complaints.

In Conclusion

That is exactly how you would create your own TV pack on D2H through their website. You can even use their mobile app for information on how to change your packs in accordance with the new TRAI pricing regime. Before you can actually choose your pack, you can even check out the possible pricing of your intended pack through the TRAI Channel selection application. Though the application may not help you change the pack, it can help you arrive at the cheapest possible pricing.

Before we leave you, we would share our views on the new regime. While the idea of TRAI had been to make it easy on the pockets of the subscribers, in reality, the TV viewing is may increase by a whopping amount if you have to take subscribe to channels that all your family likes. As in our case, our existing pack costs us Rs. 725 including taxes, while if we want to watch the same channels under the new regime, the cost will come up to Rs. 1100+! While for my neighbours, which is a family of 2, the bill has come down from Rs. 550 to Rs.475. It should clearly be an indication to prove that the new pricing adopted by broadcasters has been a damper on TRIAs intentions and for a majority, the prices are only going to increase. We just need to look ahead to see if the TRAI speculation that the channel prices will come down holds true in the future.
