How to use WhatsApp in local Indian languages?


WhatsApp supports ten Indian languages as of now. The languages supported include Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, and Malayalam. You can use your WhatsApp installation for accessing its features in these multiple languages.

There are two ways you can do it. You may either change the language from app settings itself or choose to change the device language so that your WhatsApp installation can follow it. We will explain both these methods one by one.

Change WhatsApp language within the app settings


As we said before, WhatsApp supports 10 Indian languages, though we expect more of them getting added soon. Follow the steps here below to change the app language to suit your preferences.

  • Launch WhatsApp
  • Tap on the Menu button. You should find it at top right corner in the form of three dots.
  • Tap on Settings.
  • Tap on Chat
  • Now tap on App Language.
  • You should now find the list of languages supported. Tap on your preferred language.
That should do it. Next time you launch WhatsApp, the app will launch in your preferred language.
Please note that the list of languages available to you will be dependent upon the language capabilities of your phone.

Change WhatsApp language through Device Language Settings


WhatsApp can follow the device language. If the device language is set to Marathi, WhatsApp will automatically be configured to run in Marathi. You can make use of this fact to change the WhatsApp language on your device.

  • Launch Settings on your Android.
  • Tap on Languages and Input
  • Tap on Languages
  • Choose the language of your preference. Ypu may need to tap on Add Language and choose your preferred language.
  • Exit Settings
That's all you need to do. Please note that the languages available would be dependent upon your device. Also the settings as featured above will be dependent upon the device model, Android version and manufacturer customisation as well.
If you are on iOS, you may follow the steps below -
  • Launch Settings app.
  • Tap General
  • Locate and tap on Language and Region
  • Choose iPhone Language
  • Choose the language you want.
  • Exit Settings
You have successfully changed the device language and in turn WhatsApp language.
Please note that this method would change the device language in its entirety to the chosen default language. All your apps and other actions would be in the chosen language.
