Newsrooms that cover electronics gadgets are now abuzz with the latest Apple event organized in San Francisco where its latest iPhones- Apple 7 and 7 plus were unveiled.

Let us now take a look at the salient features of the two offerings. The smartphones from Apple 7 series have the same sleek design as its predecessors. So, viewers must not expect a complete make-over in the new products. However, what is now confirmed is that indeed Apple has proved rumors about a jet black colored new iPhone right. The phones are available in two varieties of black- the first has a jet black color with a shiny finish. The second, more subdued is in matte black. The phones will also come in its usual hues like gold, silver, and rose gold.

The highlights of the new iPhones are centred on four factors-

• Lack of a headphone jack
• Water resistance
• A revised home button and
• A more powerful camera

Coming to the specifics, the most significant change is that the phones have been done away with a headphone jack. Now with every iPhone 7 box, the user will have a 3.5 mm adapter that has effectively replaced the good old headphone jack. The removal of the headphone jacks offers precious room inside the phone for fitting other components.

The phones are now made to bear splashes of water though certainly still not resistant to full-blown drenching in water. So beware if you are thinking of taking your iPhone during a swimming session!

Moving to the home button, it is now in a 'solid state' and will not click in like the previous models. The Taptic Engine will detect a press as usual and will respond with a recognizable feedback. The Touch ID fingerprint sensor is same as before.

Now let's look at the most anticipated feature- the camera. iPhone cameras are known for their excellence and are extremely popular among users. So, there is a lot of excitement about the camera whenever a new phone is launched. iPhone lovers need not be disappointed because one of the attractions of the iPhone 7 series is indisputably a more refined camera experience. The improvements over the previous models boast of a front-facing camera with a 5MP resolution, a TrueTone Flash consisting of 4 LEDs to deliver more powerful illumination, a refined 12MP shooter empowered with optical image stabilization and a wider F1.8 aperture. However, to access the really cool dual camera setup, consumers will have to buy the more expensive iPhone 7 plus.

Among the other highlights is that the two phones will have the longest battery life ever in an iPhone. The battery on the iPhone 7 lasts 14 hours when using WiFi and 12 hours when used on 4G. The iPhone 7 Plus meanwhile lasts 15 hours on WiFi and 4G. Among the internal specification, it is worth mentioning that the models will be powered by Apple A10 Fusion with a 64-bit core CPU, more powerful than its predecessors.

Coming to price and availability, Apple says the new phone will be available for purchase on September 16th, though preorders can be made from September 9th. The Apple iPhone 7 price is $649 for 32 GB storage and depending on storage that will go up to 256GB will be labelled at $849. The iPhone 7 Plus is definitely more expensive than its predecessor, starting at $769 for the 32GB version and will go up to $969 for the top model with larger storage space.

In the last few days, critics are already up their sleeves with their opinion that the latest iPhones do not offer any significant changes to their predecessors. The design of the smartphones is same as the phones released last year. It is being pointed out that the only major real change is removing the headphone jack, the rest are tweaks and upgrades to previous versions. The two phones therefore it seems are made to appeal to niche buyers only.

It is also being speculated if major updates will only be made in the new launches in 2017 when iPhone will have its 10th anniversary. Of late, sale of iPhones have seen a decline in the market. The company sure has to have a master plan in the pipeline if it has re- acquire lost ground.

Really, we are excited to see what kind of reception the two new iPhones will get in the market.
