Review of Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus

I recently reviewed the Honor Holly 2 Plus budget smartphone. It is an impressive device in its price range. Read further to learn how the device performs in its category.

The Huwaei Honor Holly 2 Plus is a budget smartphone to fit in every pocket, not just by the size but by the price as well. Bundled with a faux-metal frame, quad core processor and Android Lollipop, this phone will give a real challenge to other budget smartphone manufactures in the market. I have been using the photo for last few weeks and here is my hands-on review of Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus.

Build and Design

Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus is bundled in faux-metal frame which is an upgrade over earlier Holly series of plastic frame Holly phones. Though this is not any massive change but for Huawei, it's a leap in the area of phone design. The 5 inch HD (1280 x720 pixels) IPS LCD display is added with a 5 MP camera in the right, proximity censor in the left and receiver on the top. From the front, left side of the device looks pretty clean with censors and buttons. The 3.5mm headphone jack is placed on the top of the frame. On the bottom area are embedded micro-USB charging and dual speaker grilles.

Display

The Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus has an impressive display in its segment but not so noteworthy when you compare it with other premium phones. The glass quickly turns dirty because it has no oleophobic coating. Viewing angles are not the best as the gap between screen and display below it is pretty unusual. However when I hold it onto my palms images looks crisp and sharp. I tested the phone in bright sunlight for display and it is not bad either. While indoors, watching a movie or playing a game holding onto palms is pretty cool.

Software

The Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop. The Huawei custom EMUI 3.1 skinning enhances the phone experience a lot. With this, the Huawei has done away with the flashy things like animated wallpapers and theme store etc those may actually slow down the MediaTek MT6735 chipset. Overall result is a cool UI with no hassles. The home screen layout is like iOS with no extra apps. In addition, you can spot only the important apps like Backup App, Updater and HiCare holding service centre details.

The Huawei's EMUI offers many benefits like you can password protect your data with the help of inbuilt File Manager App; flip to mute and select distinct set up for navigation bar or quit it. The software feature makes Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus an advanced phone in comparison to other budget android smartphones in the market.

Camera

I often go out in the night. The 13 mega pixel rear camera catches awesome pictures during the day. However, in the night when visibility is low, picture quality is not really great, which is common for most cameras in this price range. The 5 mega pixel front camera is pretty prefect to take selfie all the time. I hold the camera in portrait mode and found flash, swap camera and options buttons on the top and on the bottom, previous photos, shutter and a filters option. Video quality is also good and limited to 720p. The software stabilizer mode assists in improving the shaky videos.

Performance

I tested the Holy 2 Plus under varied conditions for multitasking like streaming YouTube Videos, making phone call, writing emails and chatting with Facebook friends. While doing this over a 3G network, I found phone performance above average. Thanks to the MediaTek MT6735 chipset and EMUI 3.1 Lite that makes this phone awesome for any above average user.

Battery

Often I need a phone that can give me unlimited connectivity throughout the day. To test I streamed media for hours and the battery performance was excellent. In my opinion, battery life is good for both average and heavy users. I need to plug the charger for my Holly 2 only once a day.

Features

The Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus is packed with awesome hardware and software features. The quad core processor, dual SIM setup, 1280×720 pixel array, Wi-Fi 802.11, b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS and a micro USB port (with OTG) for charging and data transfers, EMUI Lite and Android 5.1 Lollipop makes it best buy smartphone.

Pricing

The price is Rs. 8499/- only. Yes, at the time of writing, this phone is available for this price through the official website http://wwww.hihonor.com/in/. You can buy this phone using online banking; also Cash on Delivery option is available.

Verdict

Based on my past experience with Holly 2 Plus, I would recommend this device to anyone who is looking for a budget smartphone with all basic smart features. If you are looking for a more premium smartphone, you may want to look at Honor 5X, which is mid-range smartphone from the same company.

Though a good device in most respects, there are certain missing features. The phone does not seem to have USB OTG functionality. Given the fact that it is one of the most sought after features. some prospective buyers may be dissuaded from opting for it.
Battery should be one of the best features with this device. Video loop tests have indicated a result of around 11 hours, so that should mean we can get more than a day's backup even with heavy usage.
