Best data recovery apps for your Laptop, PC or smartphone

Losing your important data can be a really horrible experience. The PCs, Laptops and smartphones we use to store our data almost on a daily basis are never reliable to preserve your data. You cannot have a tool that promises you that your device will never lose data. However, there are some reliable tools that can retrieve the deleted data – at least some of that. Let us find the a few such data recovery software solutions in this article.

Almost all the digital devices we use store our personal data. Imagine something striking your device and you lose your data. The thought makes your heart skip a bit, right? Don't worry – you have a saviour called data recovery software. If you have any personal data that has been deleted accidentally, or because of a corrupted system, you can rely on these software to get back that all important data.

How do the Data recovery apps work?

When a particular data is deleted from your system - either intentionally, or by accident – it is not actually deleted from the system. It is only marked as deleted and hidden from you by the OS. The data will remain hidden till you keep on adding more data. The data marked as deleted will remain recoverable till it is over written by a future data.
So, as long as as it is not over written, you stand a chance to retrieve the deleted data. That is exactly what these Data Recovery apps do. They recover the data that has been marked as deleted and hidden. If the data gets rewritten, you do not stand a chance to get the data back.
Let us enlist the top data recovery apps in the following paragraphs. Each one of them have their own compatibility and capacities. These applications can be used in combination. Using them together does not affect your recovery in any way, in fact, it can improve your recovery if one app does not succeed in getting all your data back.

#1. Recuva

Recuva is the numero uno of all data recovery solutions. It has the distinction of doing everything in an automated fashion. It can retrieve almost any type of file. The software has a free version which is enough for all your needs of data recovery.

On start up, it will run a wizard and ask you what you want to undelete, and based on your choice of the available options – will run the task assigned in an automated way. You do not need to anything. It lists out the files found in a table. You just need to select the files you would wish to recover and click on Recover. All the selected files will be saved to the specified folder.
Recuva supports FAT, exFAT and NTFS file systems. It can recover data from your hard drives, USB drives, CD/DVD, BluRay disc and microSD cards. The solution has an Advanced Mode that has more deeper options. You can choose Deep Scan which is a bit slower, but recovers more files. The advanced mode can be used to recover files with a particular text, or as an option to completely wipe off a particular file so that it can never be recovered.
Available for - Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10.

#2. Pandora Recovery

Pandora Recovery is another data recovery software that is comparable to Recuva. It does not boast of any attractive user interface like Recuva, but has its own place of respect with the features.

Like Recuva, it too has a wizard to guide you through the recovery process. Thus, your task of recovering the lost data becomes quite easy and fairly automatic. The software is capable of recovering data on FAT 32 and NTFS file format.
It has some additional features that make it a better option in comparison to the competing software solutions. Pandora recovery lets you view the files it identifies in a view that resembles the Windows Explorer. Thus you can search for the files by the file name, date or any other search criteria.
The application uses a Surface Scan option which does retrieve almost all the deleted files. It works akin to the Deep Scan option on Recuva.
Available for - Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10.

#3. Wise Data Recovery

If you have lost the data and want to retrieve it quicker, Wise Data Recovery can be your best option. Sure, it lacks the feature set that the competing applications have, yet with its quicker performance – it beats others when you want to recover your data real quick.

You just need to install it and launch to use it. Choose the drive you want to scan and it presents you with the list of files that can be recovered quite quickly. It can scan and recover files on external drives as well. It performs the scan really quickly compared to the competing applications.
The application works real fast and has no complicated menus or tough procedures to understand. Just scan and recover your files and that's it. However, Wise Data Recovery does not seem to work with FAT drives. But, it has been observed that it works excellent with NTFS file format.
Available for - Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10.

#4. Glary Undelete

Glary Undelete is one of the best free data recovery software you can ever use. It does not bring you anything spectacular in terms of functionality, but works in the best possible way for the fundamental needs of data recovery.

The data recovery is quite slow on the application. It can scan both NTFS and FAT drives and does it in an excellent way. The results are presented both in a classic way and the explorer like view. The latter lets you search for a file to recover based on the criteria you choose – be it file name, date or any other filtering option you would choose.
- Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10.

#5. Undelete 360

Being a free version of the commercial product, Undelete 360 works best for the fundamental needs of your data recovery. It does not have many extra features, yet works good enough.

Since it is a free version, it leaves out many of the options which can only be accessed by opting to upgrade. Since you have no access to premium options like filtering or previews, it can be a bit disturbing. Moreover, these options do show up in the interface and clicking them prompts you to upgrade. That tends to be more annoying.
The user interface and scanning process is quite user friendly and easy compared to certain other apps. You would just choose the drive and it will scan for deleted files and present you the complete list with a tree structure. You can choose the file type as per your choice from the tree.
Undelete 360 has been observed to find even those files that are normally missed by the competing applications.

Data recovery softwares for Smartphones

You can use the above software solutions to retrieve the lost data from your smartphone as well. You would need to connect your device to the PC or laptop via USB and scan the USB drive for the deleted files using the applications featured above. But what if you need phone specific information like the call logs, messages etc? That is where the need for apps that are specifically designed for smartphones arises.

1. Wondershare Dr. Phone
This is one of the best options if you want to recover data from your Android or iOS. The app is compatible with iOS and Android. The application can recover call logs, messages, WhatsApp history and all the data including Audio, Video or images. You will only need to connect your phone to the PC or laptop and the tool itself will take care of the rest.

The app supports a limited number of smartphones including Apple, Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG and Google Nexus. It works better with an Android phone that has been rooted.
Supported on - Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP and Mac OS X 10.6-10.10 & iTunes 12.1, iOS 8.3/iOS 9, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and upto Android Lollipop.

2. EaseUS Mobisaver
The interface and the working remains similar to Dr. Phone Wondershare. It works in the same way as Dr. Phone. Once you install the application on your PC, connecting your smartphone to the PC will detect your device and begin scanning the files that have been deleted.
However, the EaseUS app suffers in one of the aspects when compared to Wondershare. It supports less number of data types. If you want more data types, you may need to get premium plans. But, the best part with the application is the support for a wider range of devices. So, if your device is not supported by Wondershare, it might be good to consider option for EaseUS.

And in conclusion….

Data recovery tools are indeed a boon in disguise. They let you save you a lot of effort and preserve your work without the fear of losing them. In fact, losing your personal data from a digital device is a horrifying experience. The applications and software featured above make the best list by the inclusion of the options from both the worlds – they cater both to the novices and the advanced users, hopefully. If my readers find any better options, I would welcome them to share their experience with those apps. I would be glad to add them to the updated list soon.
