VPN Extensions for Google Chrome

Many times ISP's block certain websites due to political, religious or legal issues. In such case you can access them using VPN services. VPN ensures that you access such blocked websites from the IP different than your host country. In this article, we are going to discuss some of the VPN extensions available for Chrome browser.

We often hear from the experts that you can always access the blocked websites using VPN. But what exactly is that? VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and the service offered by such network lets you access the internet anonymously. You can also surf the web changing your host location. For example, if you are in India, then you can change the country to Romania and surf websites which are blocked in your own country. Some VPNs these days offer such service directly from the browser itself. All you have to do is install the extension and let the VPN service do its magic. Let's take a look at some of the VPN extensions available for Chrome browser

ZenMate

This is one of the popular VPN services that offer both free and paid extension plans. It offers you to change the location of your browser. You can choose from 3 locations while using free plans. Premium plans are relatively costly but the privacy and the speed from servers compensate for that. For any plan that you choose, you get one encrypted line and faster data transfer rate. You can hide your real location and rest assured that VPN service won't be keeping the logs for your IP. Zenmate also protects you from the harmful phishing sites. This service is beneficial as using the VPN service often leads to security leaks. The extension is available for other browsers like Opera & Firefox along with a mobile platform like Android as well.

Dot VPN

The extension is very vast in terms of it's VPN offering. It lets you surf the web anonymously. And you can even customize the IP location of your browser. This way the IP that you use while surfing allows you to access the blocked websites. The speed of the VPN is relatively faster than other free VPN services. Though security and privacy-wise, the extension has a medium level of security. I'd say for basic surfing during website blocked period, you should consider using this extension. There are premium plans for the service too. Though unless your work requires regular usage, the premium service may not offer you any different experience.

GomVPN

Gom is a zero-configuration extension that you can use on Chrome. All you have to do is install the extension. It lets you access the blocked content and you can also change the country to set the IP. The speed at which Gom lets you access the content is relatively slow. Premium version of extension gets higher speed compared to free users. The privacy is moderate for the free version and premium users will find higher speed for SSL based websites. GomVPN is relatively cheap compared to other paid VPN. If your local ISP regularly blocks the websites then you should definitely consider using the premium version of this extension.

Browsec

Browsec is a VPN cloud network that filters the traffic from their private encrypted line. The speed of the extension is relatively slow but it is a more secure and privacy-conscious extension. This extension also allows you to access websites like Netflix, Pandora, Spotify etc. So those who can't get the access to blocked services like these due to geographical limitations should consider using it. All you have to do is install the extension. And click on Protect Me icon from the browser top toolbar.

Cyberghost

Not very popular service but it is hands-free and requires no configuration at all. All you have to do is use the slider button. This action sets your host country in different IP for that browser session. You can also find the speed of the network is relatively slow. In terms of privacy and security, the servers are safe on a moderate level. I'd say this is a good extension for those who wish to use VPN service quickly.

Hola

This VPN network makes use of P2P traffic in order to offer their free service. When you download the extension or the desktop software, you get connected to their P2P traffic. Using this extension is very easy. Install Hola from Google Chrome store. Now type in the URL of the blocked website. If that page returns some blocked message or server not found error, then enable the Hola button. This button allows you to choose the country and then you can access the website as a proxy of another country. Hola has few privacy and security issues since the last few months. Though official blog post has addressed those issues, still you can get the idea of insecure VPN services. The P2P traffic being insecure and being more prone to virus and other security issues. So unless you are in serious need of the unblocking certain websites, you should avoid using Hola Free VPN service.

These are some of the VPN extensions that are good to use when your ISP blocks websites. Do note that most of the ISP's also block the websites related to these VPN services. So if any of the above-mentioned website or the extensin itself gets blocked by ISP, then you have to find alternate VPN extension.

The VPN extensions really make your life simpler. Just like what VPN apps available for Android do with your connections, the extensions also work the same. They indeed help you in being able to access your favourite sites without any need to be worried about the security. Since these VPN services cut off the direct linking of your desired website to the browser and act as intermediary, you remain safer.

I personally use ZenMate on Chrome. It helped me access a lot of websites that are banned by the Indian govt. Also zenmate's servers are not slow, and they respond pretty quickly. So you can even see some video websites from US too. I don't access most of the desktop sites on Phone, so didn't used Zenmate for Android.
