WordPress for Android App Review

WordPress is a leading content management system on the web. It's obvious that the demand for this web based software has resulted in creation of an App for mobile platforms. The App is currently available in Google App Store and iTunes app store. This App is good for travelers and bloggers who wish to update their content using their Android device. In this article, we are going to review some of the features of WordPress for Android App.

WordPress CMS powers 25% of the websites hosted on the web. WordPress is not only restricted as a hosted SaaS application but has now extended itself on other platforms. Mobile apps can help you update the content on the fly and reduce the time spent on the web based app. The new Android App has now enough features that can help you manage professional blogging workflow. You can download the app from Google Play Store. Let's take a look at some of the features of Android App.

Creating Post

When you log into the dashboard you can see the icon at the bottom for creating the post. You can also access this option using the hamburger menu. When the Write post page opens, you can then hit the Google's built in Swype keyboard. If you wish to use different language then you can do so from here. Make sure that the language is supported by the WordPress core. To check if your language is supported by WordPress or not, point your browser to the official WP website and find the translation documentation.

When you login to the WordPress App you get the chance to login to WordPress.com account or self hosted website. Do note that self hosted website takes few minutes to setup on App but once set up you can push your content easily. You can use the quick post feature from the App and push the updates. Just like Tumblr app, you can also use the WordPress to post images and videos using PressThis feature of WordPress.com.

JetPack Integration

This service from WordPress makes it easy for your blog to automate certain tasks. You can connect multiple blogs with this service and update or manage multiple blogs from the single dashboard. You can use Jetpack to block the spam using Akismet add-on. Like spam you can also use the option to deny the login attempts as well. Photon image hosting allows CDN to regularly serve the images from WordPress CDN and saves your bandwidth. There are many other add-ons that you can use right from the app itself.

Theme Picker

In earlier versions of WordPress app, the feature to choose multiple themes was not present. But from recent release you're allowed to choose the themes of your choice. You can do this for both hosted WordPress.com account and also self hosted WordPress installation. You can browse, search, preview and customize your theme from the app. Though customization is not that easy to do on small devices or even tablets. You should instead only use the customization editor from the desktop or the laptop access.

If you have enabled WordPress Jetpack on your self hosted website then you can get the Stats inside the app. You can view some of the basic website stats using the Stat feature of the app. For those with the WordPress.com can use this feature as well. And there is no feature difference in between the type of accounts you hold with the app. The app isn't real time as of yet but you can view the Stats with few hours gap as of now.

For those with WordPress.com account can use the Community features. You can read the content of other blogs. Using PressThis button you can also share their content and the links on your blog. The app is yet to have support for other social networks so the social sharing with other networks may not be possible as of yet. You can do the commenting and also keep tab on the recent comments on your blog as well.

Push Notifications

Notifications on phone are possible for the alerts such as - new post published, new comment, new follower or even any update news. Apart from official notifications you can also setup App to notify you of sales made using WooCommerce plugin. So there are many possibilities with which you can use the app. For those using WordPress as a support dashboard can make use of this feature to stay updated of customer feedback. Though notifications take time to go through the cloud interface, and there is a bit of delay while reaching your device. You are less likely to get the notification instantly in most cases.

WordPress Mobile app is currently downloadable on Android and iOS. In future this app will be developed for multiple devices and you can see feature improvement in existing Android app as core updates itself. The app is free of cost to download and there are no in-app purchase or any restrictions. Only premium features that exists are part of hosted platform WordPress.com and in no way needed if you're using it for self hosted app. WordPress for Android App definitely helps improve your workflow and can help you update the blog quickly.

WordPress App for Android is regularly updated with new features. If you're blogging on daily basis and push the content then using such app can be a good option for content creators. This app can also be used for many other purpose apart from using it for content creation.
