Remember The Milk Android task manager app: Review

There are many todo-list apps in the mobile app market. Most of those apps suffer from feature clutter. It is really hard to find the app that doesn't have difficult to use UI interface and feature complexity. Remember the milk (RTM) is one app that is keeping the things simple yet effective. In this article we are going to take a look at some of the features of this Android app.

Remember the Milk is an interesting Android app to manage tasks. Unlike most of the apps, it has minimal set of features. Learning curve for this app is relatively easy compared to other productivity apps. It also has support for third party apps which makes it more usable.

If all you want is to get things done then this is the app for you. I personally prefer the app with minimalist interface and effective searching. This app offers both of these features and that is why it has around 5 million users using the web and desktop version of this app.

Let's take a look at some of the features of this Android app.

App interface is very slick and doesn't put much clutter onto your device. There is nothing complex in the user interface to go through to manage the tasks. When you open the app, you're presented with the set of tasks. Tapping on the top hamburger menu gives you access to the options menu. Tapping on the plus icon lets you add new task into the dashboard. You can set the time, tags, description, title and status for your task. Depending on the priority of the system the tasks are ordered on the screen.

RTM can integrate into Google calendar, Microsoft Outlook and few other services for reminder notifications. You can use such integration with IFTT(if this then that) service to set a reminder and get yourself notified accordingly. For example you can get yourself reminded in apps like Evernote, Outlook and Google mail.

The search feature makes using this app more effective than any other competing apps. It allows you to search for the tasks using tag, date and category. It allows you to search deeper with word search and priority for the tasks. If you have shared the task with another user then you can use that in search criteria as well. If you have plenty of tasks to track then advanced search is your weapon to sort through all of them very easily. For limited active tasks the basic search is more than enough.

Those who own iPhone can use Siri to add the task to RTM. This functionality works flawlessly and you can search, remove and add the tasks very easily. Amazon Echo support is yet to be added into RTM. However, in future this support is likely to be added into the app. If you are IFTT user then you can use Twitter and RTM for your task management. You can also use few other note taking apps like Evernote to automate your tasks.

Third Party Integration

RTM can be integrated with other services and apps. If you check out the apps section then you'll find out information on how to use RTM with that specific set of app or service. Some of the notable integration are with apps like Evernote, Twitter, IFTT, outlook, Google calendar etc. If you are RTM user and want to use the third party integration then I suggest you to read the Tips section of the forum. This forum has threads from users who have managed to use RTM with other apps. And you can learn from those threads and fit your usage scenario accordingly.

Use Cases

This app is very handy and can be used in different usage scenarios. Some of the use cases are as follows :

1. Bills : Use this app to remind yourself of the bills to be paid. If you pay the bills automatically using net-banking feature then set up IFTT alert to trigger the payment. As the app can be integrated with IFTT, you can set up the triggers very easily.

2. Project Management : Use this app to keep list of tasks to be finished. Using the deadline and reminder system you can keep yourself notified. Though there is no group sharing feature with this app so it's more useful for freelancers or remote workers.

3. Shopping List: Keep tab on the list of items to purchase. Mark them in your smart lists and shop accordingly. This saves time and also avoid impulse purchases. You can also keep list of items to shop for online.

4. Appointments : Use smart lists and smart add feature to keep tab on appointments. This way you don't have to worry about missing an appointment or events. This also helps you in networking or keeping tab of events to attend. You can mark Meetup dates or RSVP events into RTM tasks.

These are some of the examples of usage scenarios. There are no limits under which you are restricted to use this app. If you check out the forum of this app then you'll come across many tips and usage examples. Try those tips and see how you can improve your own productivity.

Pro Version

If you are a power user and require additional integration features then you should definitely upgrade to pro. Remeber The Milk app can integrate with the social media sites, email programs and few other services. This way you can integrate the app to the automation systems like IFTT, calendars and reminder systems. Though 25$ per year is not expensive, I don't find the pro version effective for those who just want to use simple task management system.

Remember the Milk is very effective task management app for Android. Unlike most of the apps which are too hard to learn, this app is fairly straight forward. And it stays out of your way till the reminder or notifications arrives from the queue. If you're struggling with productivity then give RTM a try and see how it helps you stay organized.
