Asana: An App for Project Management
Google play store has plenty of Project management apps. However there are very few apps that are powerful enough for serious project management needs. Most of the project management apps also suffer from feature clutter. Asana on the other hand is one such app that is easy to use, minimalist and less clutter to navigate through. In this article, we are going to look at some of the features and use cases of Asana App for Android.
Asana is a powerful project management app to help track the progress of tasks and handle the projects effectively. The app regularly gets improved on it's features and the user interface and navigation. Let's take a look at some of the features of the Asana for Android app. Creating a Task
In order to create a new task in your app, you just have to click on the "plus' icon listed at the bottom of the app. In case of web based interface you get the button that says "New task". If you want more details about the task then you simply have to tap on the task listed. You can click on the edit button icon and edit the task description and title. Once this task is created, you can sync it with the web and it'll be available to other members in your team.
You can set due dates, attachments, assigned users and tags to the tasks. You can also add the comments into your tasks if needed. Only the team leaders and the admins can assign the tasks. Other team members can comment, attach files or tag on specific tasks. Dashboard
Depending on the role assigned to you the dashboard view changes accordingly. For example, team leaders get the view of the pending tasks ordered as per the due dates. Whereas the team members get the view of the tasks assigned to them, due dates and the discussion in which they are included. They can also see the messages right from the dashboard itself. Though some of the dashboard options are not effective but you can easily sort them out accordingly. Email Client
Asana has a built in message client that you can either use as instant messenger or simply email system. You can send instant notification to your team members or a single team member. There is also support for the emoticons included into the client. These messages can be archived once the project is finished or task is completed. Priority
Tasks can be prioritized and assigned to a specific user. In such case you can also create shortcut without having to go through the tasks. Priorities can also be color coded which is fairly common feature among the project management apps. You can also set the order in which the tasks are to be prioritized. Most of the tasks get auto ordered using the due date. Attachments
Most of the projects do have some attachments and we want the team members to look through them. Asana has a feature to let you attach the documents. You can attach files like image files, documents, sound file, video file. There is a file size limit on how much you can attach for free plan. In case of premium plan the limit is more flexible compared to the free plan. One feature limitation to note that there is no file preview for the attached file. Search
When you have too many tasks for the projects then searching in between them is not so easy. You have to make use of the tags to filter through the tasks. You can also search using the name o the tasks. Search is more effective if they could offer the feature of sorting based on due dates.Calendar
Asana calendar is handy if your tasks are on deadline and you want to keep track of them. The calendar can be synced to the Google calendar or the Outlook calendar. This way you'll be notified about your task completion across multiple apps. Reminder system is also effective in between those platform as each one makes use of it's own reminder feature for calendar marked tasks. Use Cases
Apart from the obvious usage scenario of project management, asana can be used for many other use cases. For example if you have team members working on a project, then use Asana for reporting rather than task management. Asana can also be used for product development where you can track the progress as opposed to tracking the tasks. It can also be used for the sales lead tracking. Some users are also using it as revenue tracker and projection for their service or product. Pricing
Asana app comes in with two sets of plans - Free and Paid. Free plan has all the features that gets your project management tasks done. However the paid plan offers you the option to add more team members. It is free up-to 15 team members and for additional members you have to upgrade to paid plan. Is it worth paying? If you have a small team or your business have limited users reporting to you then free plan can get your work done. In such case the paid plan is overkill, though it does pay off with all the premium features. Apart from android app you can download the app in your iPhone or use it from the web too. If you use the project management app like Asana in everyday business usage then yes, such apps are worth paying for. Conclusion
If you are looking for project management and team productivity app then Asana is worth checking out. If your usage and the team is bigger in size then premium plan is what you need for your company. For most of the freelancers and individuals free plan is more than enough for the needs. It is powerful app that can improve your product management and help you meet the deadlines for the service or product delivery.
Is it equally effective for individual usage? Also, I just wanted to know how the reminder works out in it. My basic question with such apps is, if you remember to see what's left, then you are already aware of it. But the problem crops up when some task is forgotten and is not met on time. I am a little bit curious about those cases.
