The tablets market in India is quite saturated. There are a multitude of affordable and even cheaper varieties available. The Looks

The Galaxy Tab S2 is really a premium device in its looks. It has a metallic construction for its body. The side panels have chamfers which results in a comfortable grip. The metal build is in sharp contrast with the previous Samsung devices which were criticised for the cheap plastic construction.

The build quality is quite good. The right side houses the power button, volume rockers and the microSD card slot. The top edge is free from any buttons, while the bottom positions microUSB port and audio jack. The device is definitely the slimmest tablets currently available. The physical dimensions are good enough for a one handed use.

It is considerably lightweight. It is much surprising to see such low weight in spite of a larger display, metal body and a mammoth battery. It does not make your hands feel tired from gaming or reading books.

The Screen

The Galaxy Tab S2 comes with a 9.7 inch display with super AMOLED resolution. The resolution reads 1536x2048. The colors and fonts look quite crispy. The super AMOLED display does not need any further introduction. It makes all of whatever is there on your screen come alive.

Samsung has always excelled in providing better displays. No one can beat the Samsung expertise in the display department. The brightness you can experience on your Galaxy Tab S2 is quite impressive. Besides, you have a couple of modes for the display - Basic mode which is average as the name suggests and the Adaptive display mode which can optimise color, saturation and sharpness. The third mode - AMOLED Cinema mode is equivalent to the Dynamic mode on your TV.

The super AMOLED screen is arguably the best to be observed in a tablet. It offers stunning blacks and vibrantly saturated colors.

The Performance

The tablet is powered by Exynos 5433 octacore processor that has a clock speed of 1.9 GHz (In fact, four cores operate at 1.9 GHz and the other four at 1.3 GHz). The graphics are taken care of by Mali- T760 GPU. Coupled with it is a massive 3 GB RAM.

The multitasking experience is quite smooth, thanks to the effective 3 GB RAM. The Tab is fast enough in terms of gaming or multitasking. The device is good for avid gamers. The resource hungry games launch and run quite smoothly. The super AMOLED screen provides lifelike graphics.

The Tablet comes with a 32 GB internal storage. You can expand the memory by another 128 GB. That makes a good deal of storage space. Samsung has stated that the device will also available in 64 GB memory variant. However, currently only 32 GB version is available for purchase. There is no word on when will Samsung release the 64 GB variant.

The Software

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 comes with Android Lollipop 5.0.2 out of the box. There are strong signals to the availability of Android Marshmallow 6.0 soon. The customisation is provided by the usual TouchWiz UI. There are not much bloat ware that comes preinstalled. But, after the recent agreement with Microsoft, an entire suite of Microsoft apps come preinstalled.

The Tab S2 has a Connect app which essentially consists of three sections - Support, Discover and Promotions. The Support section is a collection of FAQs on how no use the tab. It also has a video chat access to discuss your issues with a Samsung representative. The Discover section consists of tips on certain important features of the device. Lastly, Promotions section has promotional content on various offers available for other Samsung products.

You have access to multi-window functionality which has become a common feature on high end Samsung devices. The fingerprint scanner is embedded in the Home button. It works slightly different from what has been a usual practice. You have to place your finger on the scanner than swiping it on it. The device can save four different fingerprints.

The finger print scanner is capable of registering your fingerprints quite faster. The TouchWiz UI has certain meaningful features in the form of Smart Stay, Reading Power and a host of Indian languages. You also have access to a Private Mode which can be used to hide your confidential files from Gallery, Videos or documents.

The Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 sports a 8 MP rear camera. The camera app is quite similar to what we have seen on the Samsung high end phones. As a rule, cameras on a tablet are meant for basic convenience (like scanning documents or video calling). It is not the camera for an everyday usage. The camera on Tab S2 comes up as an exception. It is one of the best in the tablets category. You have a couple of scene modes - Panorama, HDR and Virtual Shot. The Virtual Shot can take a 360 degree image. Images shot at full resolution come come sharp enough with vibrant colors. Low light photography, however, has some graininess associated with it.

The tab has a 2.1 MP front snapper. It is capable of some decent self is, apart from being a good video conferencing tool. The colors appear quite accurate and the images are crisp.

Battery and other features

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is powered by a 5870 mAh battery. The battery tests conducted at review centres have found the battery to last around 14 hours. A normal user should be able to get a usage of around two to three days of backup. Standby time of the device is too excellent. Review site have reported that the tab was left with over 90 per cent of charge after charging it fully and not using for two days. The battery supports faster charging and also has a Ultra Power Saving Mode.

The tab needs a nano SIM to function. It does offer 4G connectivity. The phone supports Download Booster. It is compatible with most of the WiFi standards. Other connectivity options include Blue tooth 4.1 and microUSB.

Price and availability

The device is priced at Rs. 39400. You can buy it from the official Samsung India site or other online stores. In terms of better hardware and camera performance, the price tag appears quite justified. Amazon India offers a special offer on data packs for AirTel users. Prepaid users can get 2GB of 3G/4G data per month for two months. Postpaid users can get a maximum bill discount of Rs. 450 per month for two months.

Parting Thoughts

Well, the tablet market in India is quite saturated with many affordable devices reigning. Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 carries the risk of being blended in the similar tablets. But being a good Android device with some really awesome features may turn the tables in its favour. Only aspect that can go against it could be the price. Though not exactly equivalent to iPad, it is a good replacement to the expensive option that an Apple device is.
