So the two new Nexus devices of the year are out. The Nexus 5X is manufactured by LG, while the Nexus 6P has been done by Huawei. The latter is a premium device among the two. Are you confused between the two? Just curious to differentiate the two flagships of the year from Google? We will compare the siblings in the following paragraphs.

Unlike what has been the regular practice over the years, Google has launched two Nexus devices this year - the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P. The siblings are the first ever phones to pack in the sugary sweetness of Android Marshmallow. What are the basic differences between these two phones? We will try making a comparative analysis here in this article.

Design and build

The phones have distinct differences between them based on the design perspective. The P in the 6P stands for premium. The Nexus 6P is the big brother of the lot. It is bigger and larger than the Nexus 5X. It is made of aluminium. The device boasts of an all metal uni body construction. Google has claimed that they have used "aeronautical grade Aluminum".

The physical dimensions of the phone read 159.3x77.8x7.3 mm while it weighs 178 grams. The aluminium frame and finishing makes the phone appear quite premium. The bulge on the back of the phone is quite unhappy to be about in terms of aesthetics. But, you have no choices when it comes to color options - you get only Black and Carbon Black color variants. However, there have been some indications of a silver color version coming soon.

On the other hand, the Nexus 5X is too plasticky. With the physical dimensions of 147x72.6x7.9 mm, the device weighs just 136 grams. The plastic build makes it quite light and offers comfortable in handling. The plastic construction could make a few customers who look for premium build turn away from the Nexus 5X. However, it is more colorful than the Nexus 6P. The phone comes in three color options of Charcoal Black, Ice Blue and Quartz White.

From the front, you will not be able to tell the difference between the two of them, except that the 6P has a 5.7 inch screen while the 5X sports a 5.2 inch display. The Nexus 6P is a bit thinner in comparison to the Nexus 5X. Rest of the features as far as design is concerned remain similar to each other.

As said before, the Google Nexus 5X is blessed with a 5.2 inch IPS LCD display. It has a full HD resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The IPS display should offer better viewing angles and improved sunlight legibility. But still, the screen is a little reflective. The screen has Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The display is quite sharper with a pixel.density of 424 ppi.

While the Google Nexus 6P has a AMOLED display. The screen size is bigger 5.7 inch. The display has a quad HD resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. The combination of AMOLED display and the quad HD resolution makes it one of the vibrant displays ever. The pixel density of the device is 518 ppi. The screen has Gorilla Glass 4 protection. There is a Oleophobic coating over the glass which helps preventing fingerprint smudges.

In terms of display, the Nexus 6P is much sharper and crispy, however, Nexus 5X does not fall much behind.

The Nexus 6P is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octacore processor. You get an impressive clock speed of 2.0 GHz. Paired with it is 3 GB RAM. It is a real powerhouse in terms of performance.

On the other hand, the Nexus 5X is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexacore processor. The clock speed reads 1.8 GHz. The phone has 2 GB RAM. Though the Nexus 5X is capable of a good performance, but still it is sidelined by Nexus 6P with its huge RAM capacity and robust processor.

The Google Nexus 5X is available in two memory variants of 16 and 32 GB. The Nexus 6P beats the junior sibling again with the minimum storage capacity of 32 GB. You may also opt for higher options of 64 and 128 GB. Both the devices lack expandable memory slots. For those in need of more storage, Nexus 6P could be a better choice.

Both the siblings share the same rear camera. You will get 12.3 MP rear camera with laser auto focus and LED flash. The 1.55 micron sensor lets a generous amount of light into the camera, thus improving the image quality of the low light shots. The f/2.0 aperture aids in obtaining images that are more clear and sharp. However, the camera lacks optical image stabilisation whigh could be an issue for the people with shaky hands.

The Google Photos feature is closely integrated with the new Android Marshmallow camera app.

The devices differ in terms of their front cameras though. You get a 8 MP front snapper on the Google Nexus 6P. While Nexus 5X features a slightly lower 5 MP front camera. Both are capable of decent selfies.

Battery capacity

Google Nexus 6P houses a robust and massive 3450 mAh non removable battery. You will get a backup of more than a day. The music playback time is estimated at 36 hours. The battery has been stated to have an impressive 15 hours talk time.

The Nexus 5X is powered by a considerably lower level 2700 mAh battery which may not provide the kind of backup you would expect. However, the Doze feature introduced by Android Marshmallow comes quite handy when conserving the battery.

Both 5X and 6P have the new USB-C connector support. It is a good gesture as it supports faster charging. You would not get wireless charging though on either of them.

Well, both of them are similar in this respect. They are the first devices to come with Android Marshmallow out of the box. Pure stock Android experience will definitely be a unique feel. Moreover, you are assured of timely software updates. Besides, there are many goodies introduced by Android 6.0. Google Now has now become more context sensitive. The Doze feature restricts background processes when the phone is idle. This will be much helpful in preserving battery life. There are a lot positives like improved RAM manager, Android Pay and Better app permissions among others.

Price and availability

The Google Nexus 6P is more premium. Like Google stated at the launch event - P stands for premium. And the pricing confirms it. Nexus 6P will be available at Rs. 39900 for the 32 GB version, while the 64 GB variant is priced at Rs. 42999. The phone will launch by the end of this month in India.

The more sober Nexus 5X is available at Rs. 30900 for the 16 GB version. However, it is a good bargain for the kind of features you get with it.

What are my views?

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P differ a lot from each other. The 6P is more premium in terms of build, display and battery capacity.

They remain similar on the basis of camera, software and other features.

What it all boils down to at the end is your budget. If you want an affordable handset with some near premium features, you can opt for Nexus 5X. In case you have qualms about spending, the Nexus 6P is a good choice.
