Lava Pixel V2 - What does it pack in?

Lava Mobiles - one of the prominent Indian smartphone maker seems to have been investing more on its new series - Pixel. After launching Pixel V1 in association with Google last July, they are back with a successor to the series - the Lava Pixel V2. What can we expect from this newer presentation from Lava? Let us find out!

Lava has plans up its sleeves to promote its new smartphone series, Pixel. Pixel V1 was launched in July as part of the Android One platform. Now, Lava is back with Pixel V2. Planned to go on sale in September, the device does not share much of its specifications with the predecessor. Here is a quick look at what it is made up of.

Design and Display

The Pixel VI looks much like a Sony smartphone. It has the physical dimensions of 141.6x70.8x7.6mm. It tilts the scales at just 128 grams. It does have a premium look because of the glass coat on front and back. With the thickness of only 7.6 mm, it is one of the thinner smartphones currently available. You can buy this phone in two color variants of Royal Black and Icy White.

It sports a 5 inch HD IPS display at a resolution of 1280x720. The IPS display should give you better viewing angles. Watching videos or playing games with a group of friends should not be an issue - thanks to the wider viewing angles. Sunlight legibility is quite comfortable. The screen is protected by fAsahi DragonTail protection.

Well, the price point at which the phone has been offered results in much of the compromises. It is powered by a MediaTek MTK6735 quad core processor. The clock speed of the processor is a good 1.3 GHz. The processor is 64 bit compatible which is a good news for the techians. This is a certain improvement over the predecessor which carried a 32 bit processor. You are ensured of faster and efficient operational abilities and effective RAM management. You get 2 GB on board RAM which should be enough (or even more than the needed) for a lag free multitasking experience. Internal storage has seen a drop from the Pixel V1 which had 32 GB internal memory. The new phone has only 16 GB of storage space which can be expanded by another 32 GB via microSD card.

The Pixel V2 has been targeted as a photography centric device. It seems Lava has plans up its sleeve to take on the newer launches like Asus Zenfone 2 Laser. The phone sports a 13 MP rear camera with dual LED flash. It has a f/2.0 aperture and a 1.4 micron pixel sensor. Other camera features include 5 element Largan lens and Blue Glass filter. The camera provides advanced features like geotagging, face detection and a host of shooting modes. You can record HD videos at 1080p. On the front, the device carries a 8 MP snapper for your video chatting and selfie needs. The front camera comes with 4 element lens and f/2.4 aperture. The wide angle lens on the front camera alleviates the need for a selfie stick. You can easily shoot a large group of your friends.

In one of the excellent additions, the front camera carries a flash as well. It should be a thoughtful idea in the face of competition and a good news for the camera buffs. The cameras also have some well thought out settings and modes like GIF maker, Pic focus and Beauty modes among others.

Pixel V2 runs on it's own software developed by Lava. The Star OS 2.0 is based on Android Lollipop 5.1. Being an entirely new OS, we need to wait for the reviews or user experiences on the OS. Interestingly enough, Lava has not continued to have the Android One platform observed on the Pixel V1.

Battery and other features

The device is powered by a 2500 mAh Li-Po battery. Lava has not yet revealed the standard standby time. It is claimed to provide a talk time of up to 9 to 10 hours on 3G. The phone comes with dual SIM functionality. It offers you 4G compatibility. Other connectivity features include 3G, Bluetooth 4.1 ( which incidentally, is the latest version), WiFi and GPS.

Pricing and availability

Pixel V2 is priced a bit lower than the predecessor. The phone has been priced at Rs. 10750. You can buy this device from online and offline stores. Lava has stated that the phone will be available from September 15.

Early impressions

It is clear that the phone has been targeted at photography enthusiasts. Whether it can beat the trends set by Phones like Asus Zenfone 2 Laser is what can decide the fate of Pixel V2. There are other competitors like Samsung Galaxy J5 as well which are ready to take it head on. It could be a value for money device given its great features and excellent camera.
