Moto G 3rd Gen vs Xiaomi Mi4i - A comparative face off

Motorola announced the upgraded version of its Moto G, in fact, the third iteration earlier this month. The device which aided Motorola in making a comeback into mainstream smartphone arena is now pitted against the powerhouses like Xiaomi Mi4i and Lenovo K3 Note. How does the new offering from Motorola compete against the Xiaomi beast? Let us dig a little deeper to find it out.

Moto G helped Motorola regain its lost glory in the Indian smartphone market. Since then, the manufacturer has come up with one more successor to the device in the form of Moto G 2nd edition. Now, the third edition of the most successful device globally faces a multiple contest from a new breed of smartphones. One of them is Xiaomi Mi4i. Let us compare the two devices to find out which one of them is capable of overtaking the other.

MOTO G 3

Design and Build

Xiaomi Mi4i has a polycarbonate back cover which is non removable. The matte finish ensures better grip, thus making it  comfortable in handling. It measures 138.1x69.6x7.8 mm and weighs 130 grams.
Moto G 3rd Gen on the other hand has textured back cover and a metal strip that supports camera sensor, flash and the Motorola logo. It has physical dimensions of 142.1x72.4x11.6 mm and weighs a bit on the heavier side compared to Mi4i. The back cover is removable and opening it gives access to SIM slot and microSD card slot. In terms of design, Moto G wins accolades with its metallic finish frame which is premium looking.
Mi4i is available in a variety of colors, but Moto G offers you the option of opting for different back panels as per your liking. Though a bit thicker, Moto G wins over Mi4i in the design department.

Display

The Moto G sports a 5 inch IPS HD display at a resolution of 720x1280. It gives you a pixel density of 294 ppi. This could be a reason to frown upon for those who love clarity and sharpness on their mobile screen. Being a IPS display aids it in offering better viewing angles and a good good sunlight legibility. Strangely enough,  while most of the competitors are coming up with full HD displays - Motorola stuck with the same display from its predecessor.
Xiaomi has one of the best displays at this price point on the Mi4i. It comes with a 5 inch full HD display at a whopping 1920x1080 resolution. It offers you an impressive pixel density of 441 ppi. Xiaomi has claimed that it has Sunlight Display which adjusts the contrast of each pixel in real time. You get a perfect anti glare screen.
Mi4i definitely scores over the Moto G 3rd edition in terms of display quality.

Hardware

Moto G is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quadcore processor. It has a clock speed of 1.4 GHz. It has 2 GB on board RAM which should be enough for effective multitasking. You also get a 1 GB RAM variant with a lesser 8 GB internal memory variant. The version with 2 GB RAM has an internal memory of 16 GB.  You  can expand the memory using a microSD card upto 32 GB.
Xiaomi Mi4i boasts of being powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octacore processor. The clock speed is an impressive 1.7 GHz. It offers you a 2 GB RAM which has almost become a norm now. You get an internal memory of 16 GB. The phone lacks expandable memory which could be a big drawback.
So selecting the best would be a bit confusing. If you want a performance beast, you can opt for Mi4i, but will have to be content with limited memory. On the other hand, Moto G provides a well balanced processing power along with a good storage.

Software

Moto G runs on Android Lollipop 5.1.1 out of the box. It provides a clear stock Android experience. With no bloatware, you get the best of smoother lag free operation. You can expect timely updates for the device.
Mi4i runs on Android Lollipop as well out of the box.  But it has heavy customisation with MiUI 6.0. This heavy skin takes away the pleasure of using pure Android. If you love the stock Android experience, it wound be advisable to opt for Moto G.

Camera

Moto G comes with a 13 MP rear camera with a f/2.0 aperture which helps you take wide angled snaps. It has dual LED flash. Motorola has claimed that it has brought many under the hood improvements on the camera hardware. It sports a front snapper of 5 MP resolution.
Mi4i has long been praised for its camera quality. There have been rave reviews about its excellent images. It has a 13 MP rear camera with autofocus, flash and HDR features. Just like Moto G it too sports a 5 MP front camera.
Both the devices are capable of recording HD videos at 1080p resolution. There is not much of a difference between the two competitors from the perspective of  the camera functionalities.

Other features

Motorola has surprisingly packed in a low 2470 mAh battery on their latest device. Mi4i on the other hand has a massive power pack of 3120 mAh.  However, given the lower clock speed and low resolution screen on Moto G - the incremental battery capacity should not make much of a difference between the backup provided by both the phones.  Both the phones are similar as far as the connectivity options are concerned. Both of them support 4G. You get all regular connectivity features like WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth.
One of the features Moto G scores over Mi4i is the water resistance that it offers. It has a IPX7 level water resistance which is the unique feature at this price point. The phone can survive on being one meter under water for thirty minutes. Though high end smartphones provide the feature,  Moto G is the first device to carry this functionality in the budget category.

Wrap Up

The Moto G looks inferior when compared straightaway with the better phones in this price segment. Mi4i scores over Moto G in terms of display, processing power and battery. However Moto G packs in some features these competitors never thought off - water resistance being one of them. Though, Motorola has left out on some of the features to stay in competition,  it has good looks and an expandable memory which make it a well balanced phone with much needed features. The stock Android and water resistance are other features which make it a good buy.
