Did you recently file income tax in India and like to know your refund status? Read this article to learn how to check your income tax refund status in the official website of Income Tax Department.

Over the last couple of years, Govt of India has made several improvements in improving the tax returns and refund process. One of the services provided by the Income Tax Department through the Tax Information Network is, check your income tax refund status online.

How to check tax refund status

It is quite straight forward to check your tax refund status. Follow the steps below:

1. Go to the official website of Income Tax Department: https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refundstatuslogin.html

2. Enter your PAN Number in the specified field.

3. Choose the assessment year.

4. Click "Submit".

Remember that the assessment year is the following year after your tax period. For example, if you like to check the refund status for the financial year "1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015", then choose your assessment year as "2015 - 2016".

Privacy concerns

As of now, this service allows you to check the tax refund status of anyone, if you know his/her PAN number. This appears to be a flaw and raises concerns over the privacy of tax payers. Hope the Income Tax Department will fix this problem soon and protect the privacy of the tax payers.

I agree with the author in his observation of the fact that the privacy of the assessee is at stake with the current provision. Anyone having a knowledge of someone else's PAN number can check the refund status of the concerned member. One way to address this concern could be the introduction of mobile based OTP (One Time Password). Hopefully, the department takes a note of this.
