How to test games before they come to the app store

Do you wish you can play new games before everyone else does? Your wish becomes a reality. Use the service to test games before they come to the App Store and give back to the game developing community while you have fun.

Have you always wanted to beta test games before they become available on the App Store? Maybe you enjoy gaming so much that you want to do your bit and help developers create better games. Unfortunately, if you are looking to get paid for doing this, there are no opportunities for anyone outside of a few company-employed, lucky testers.

The great news is that if you own an iOS device, you can now get access to some games early on and test them voluntarily (no pay!). All you have to do to participate is play, play, play. Any relevant info, screenshots and your session are automatically sent to the developers. Here's how you can be a part of the process.

Get Playtest (available only for iOS users) is a free service by Blue Giraffe available for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It connects game studios from across the world with gamers who would like to spend some time improving games, and is a service that spreads benefits all round. Gamers get (limited) access to betas of games as well as closed group prototypes which they can play exclusively before many others do. The game studios on the other hand get more stats from a bigger player base than they can possibly afford to pay.

Create a Playtest Account

Before you can begin to test games, you will have to sign up for an account with Playtest. You have to enter details like your name, gender and age. Only those over 17 are allowed to download the app. At this stage, you will also be asked about your favorite game genres.

Explore the Games

When you're done signing up, hit the Explore tab and look up the games for which testers are currently needed. Pick the game that looks interesting to you. Note that each game has around 100 tester slots, so you have to keep your fingers crossed and hope that the games you want to test have not already got all the testers they need.

Join the Team

When you find an open spot on the test team for a game, you can hit the "Join the Test Team" button at the bottom of the game screen. You will see a notification telling you that "You are In'. Go ahead and play for as long as you like! All the games that you are currently testing will show up in the "Games" page. When you launch the app it may take some time for the games to load on your Games screen.

You should be aware that the service takes screenshots of your gaming session from time to time, and keeps logs of your device's activity. You can leave a game in the middle of gameplay by shaking your phone, and a menu will show up asking if you want to Stop or Continue.

You do not have to be a beta tester with knowledge of the gaming market to participate in Playtest. All you need is a love for gaming, a desire to give back, and time on your hands to test the games out for the developers.
