For any issues related to IMEI, we can use IMEI change tool to set the lost IMEI. The process of setting IMEI is same in many tools. I prefer to use MTK tools.

My phone suddenly showed "invalid IMEI" error message in my notification bar. I neither had IMEI backup nor custom ROM backup. So my only option is to use MTK tool to change IMEI code. Below is the screenshot of error message.

This error is reported in Kitkat and Lollipop versions of Android devices. It can be resolved by restoring the IMEI backup or using any IMEI changing tool.

How to use MTK tool to set IMEI?

Download MTK engineering mode app from Google Play store. Launch the app and open mtk settings -> connectivity -> cds information -> radio information.

If you have dual SIM, a window pop ups and show phone 1 and phone 2. Click on phone 1.

In Phone 1:
Type the below command
AT + EGMR = 1, 7, "your imei number here"
Restart your phone.

Again launch the MTK app and go to radio information, this time choose phone 2.

In Phone 2:
Type the below command
AT + EGMR = 1, 10, "your imei number here"
Restart your phone.

mtk command to change imei

Note the difference in both commands. In the first command, I used the value 1, 7 and for second sim it will be 1, 10. The value 7 is for SIM 1 and 10 is for SIM 2. You can get your imei number either from the phone's box or remove the battery it will be labelled.

For few users, it may show "the command is not allowed in user build". Recheck the command you entered. Check whether you have provided spaces whenever needed. It is not necessary to root your phone for using this tool.
