Among the many, many cool apps to choose from in Apple's selection of over 1,000,000 applications on the iTunes App Store are some that can enhance anyone's reality. Called "augmented reality" applications, these apps utilize the iPhone's GPS system and camera to overlay information about the surrounding world onto a live camera feed.

Bionic Eye

With Bionic Eye, users are able to visualize Points of Interest on a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding area. This "world browser" uses a points of interest database that contains restaurants, coffee shops, WiFi hotspots, hospitalities, subway stations and more to help users get where they want to go.

When the device is held in the vertical position, users see a 360-degree view of all POI that is updated in real time as they walk through the streets of any city. If the iPhone is held in a horizontal position, users see a list of all POI in the surrounding area. When users select a POI, a compass is displayed that shows the direction and distance to that point of interest.

Pocket Universe : Virtual Sky Astronomy

Similar to Google's Sky Map for the Android, Pocket Universe: Virtual Sky Astronomy allows iPhone users to overlay a map of the stars onto a live feed from their iPhone's camera. When the user moves his iPhone up, down, left, or right, it utilizes its built-in compass and GPS technology to adjust the sky map accordingly.

This application displays over 10,000 stars, has 88 built-in constellations, can guide the user to any star or constellation in the sky, and even has a nigh-vision mode. This very cool app is great for any beginning astronomer who wants to navigate through the night sky.

Anyone who has ever forgotten where they parked absolutely needs to get this iPhone application. G-Park never lets users forget where they have parked. To use this app, users first park their car and hit the "Park Me!" button. They can then optionally take a photo of or write a note about the parking space.

When users want to get back to their parking spaces, they then hit the "Where Did I Park?" button. After that, they choose whether they want to use turn-by-turn directions or use an exact location which shows a compass pointing to the car. Nobody that uses this handy app will ever forget where they parked again.

Path Tracker

Path Tracker is a handy little application that tracks users' paths by GPS and allows them to upload the paths to the web and share with friends. This app displays the distance traveled, elapsed time, average speed, latitude, longitude, and altitude of the user's path and uploads it to the web. This application is perfect for recording users' routes while walking, running, jogging, hiking, biking, or traveling in one form or another. For anyone looking to record their exercise route, this iPhone application is a must-have!

With many cool apps that can augment reality, users will be able to enhance their day-to-day experiences of exercising, shopping, dining out, and more. Anyone looking to augment reality should make sure to check out Path Tracker, G-Park, and Bionic Eye, and all amateur astronomers should mke sure to have a look at Pocket Universe: Virtual Sky Astronomy.

I was looking forward to an augmented reality app for Android. We don't seem to have any great names here. Sorry if this seems to be off topic - but I am impatient for the quality observed in the apps you mentioned. A couple of apps available for Android are not that promising.
