A speculative sneak peek into the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6

Samsung is coming up with a new flagship, the Galaxy S6. Rumoured to be available from second quarter of the year, there are a lot of speculations coming up. So, what can we expect from the new device? Let us try to delve into the details.

As soon as the year nears its end and the new year is just around the corner, all technology geeks begin looking forward to the announcement of new devices, a new iPhone from Apple, a possible Nexus from Google and the most important, the next flagship in the S series from Samsung. We look forward to announcements at the CES and the MWC. Samsung is expected to announce its Galaxy S6 at the MWC 2015. What does it have on offer for us?

Will they announce it soon?

MWC- Mobile World Congress- is around the corner. The event is being held from March 2 to March 5 this year. Samsung could announce the S6 at the MWC. There were rumours of it being announced at the CES, 2015 - but that did not happen. Yet, it has been rumoured that the new S6 made an appearance only for few "select partners" behind closed doors. If this is true - we can rightly say that the launch is imminent. A " Galaxy Unpacked " event has been planned on March 1 on the sidelines of MWC.

The new flagship from SamsungSamsung galaxy s6 is believed to be an All Metal Affair. Some rumours doing the round suggest thinner edges and the front camera at the centre just above the earpiece grill, rather than the usual right hand side. The device is likely to be built from scratch without any build up from the previous S series phones. So don't be surprised if you happen to see an all new look and feel.

Samsung is expected to continue with the Super AMOLED screen on S6 as well. Resolution could be at least 2560 x 1440 or better than that. A few reports and leaks all over the Internet suggest a resolution like that with a QHD screen. As for the screen size, reports are coming in for a wide variety of them. There are indications that the S6 will have a screen slightly bigger than S5's 5.1 inch. Samsung may also jump to a 5.5 inch size to compete with the Nexus 6. Most of the leaks so far suggest a screen size of around 5.2 or 5.3 inches. The phone could come with the curved screen as seen in the Galaxy Note Edge. In fact, there are rumours to suggest the device having dual curve design. Some leaks suggest that there will be two variants- Galaxy S6 with traditional flat screen and Galaxy S6 Edge with curved screen.

With Android Lollipop bringing 64-bit support along with it, we can safely assume that S6 will have a 64-bit processor. Though there is still no confirmation on the make of the processor, given the Samsung tradition of using Snapdragon processors, it could be either Snapdragon 808 or 810 that could power the new S series flagship. Snapdragon 808 is a 6 core, while 810 is an Octa core processor both supporting 64-bit. As for GPU, Samsung could go for an Adreno 430. It is also stated that Samsung could continue with the Snapdragon 805 processor. However, since there were some overheating issues reported with Snapdragon processors, Samsung may also opt for the in-house Exynos chipset.
Since 64-bit processors are capable of handling 4 GB RAM, Samsung is not likely to settle for anything lesser than that to make the best use of its power. Samsung has been mass producing 4 GB RAMs, so it is possible to see the same on the latest offering as well. S5 had just 2 GB of RAM and Note 4 had 3 GB, we can look forward to at least 3 GB.
The phone is expected to come with a 32, 64 and 128 GB versions as far as internal memory is concerned. You can be sure of a microSD card slot as has been the common feature with Samsung phones. It has been speculated that UFS - Universal Flash Storage could also be used for flash memory.

Though Samsung is developing its own Tizen OS, we expect S6 to have an Android operating system. It is well understood that it will ship with the latest Lollipop firmware. Samsung may also lighten the TouchWiz UI so as to reduce the burden on the processor. Many of the unpopular bloatware apps are planned to be removed and being converted into downloadable apps. Samsung is understood to be keen on developing on core services.

Rumours suggest a 20 MP camera on the S6. Given the Samsung tradition of always giving 'better than the previous', we can expect it since S5 had a 16 MP camera. The phone is supposed to have a OIS - Optical Image Stabilisation feature. However, there are speculations about absence of OIS as it would make the phone bulky. But, Samsung taking off a feature like that is not expected, so we may see a compromise on the thickness of the device. The front camera is said to have a flash as well.

General Features

There are many new features coming up on the S6. Fingerprint scanner could be one of them. Heart rate monitor will continue its existence. We may also get to taste some new features like unidirectional microphones and UV sensor. A rumour states that a retina scanner may also make an appearance, though it is quite unlikely. Rumour mills suggest the presence of an iris scanner.

Though any comment on the exact price of the device will remain speculative in nature, there are leaks suggesting a price of Rs.55000 for 32 GB Galaxy S6 while 64 and 128 GB devices are expected to be priced at around Rs.62000 and RS.70000 respectively. The rumoured Galaxy S6 Edge will cost Rs. 62000 for 32 GB version and Rs. 70000 for the 64 GB version.

The rumours and speculations will not end until the device is officially announced - hopefully on March 2 at the MWC. Until then the rumour mills will go on churning out stories one after the other. But one thing is sure, Samsung will need to think into the future because a plethora of new flagships are coming up to compete with it. Let us wait and see how much future-proof new device will be.
